Letter from Hattie to Mother, January 9, 1874

Mail steamers; Music; Letters

Harriet is concerned that the next mail steamer will be another month so she is eager to get a lot of letters sent out now. She asks if her family at home would forward letters from the other family members to her as if they were purposfully sent to the "China market." She inquires about her mother's foot and talks about how nice the photograph of her parents is that Mattie received in the mail. Mattie has been practicing the organ and Lucy is helping Dr Happer teach his children. Miss Shaw's health is not good.

My dear Mother,
I do not know but I
am foolish in forming and
carrying out my plan of
writing to Every one in the
family by this particular mail
when Mattie is sending
so much and I expect
much of the [u]information[/u]
will be a "tale twice told",
But it will be a whole month
before we can send again
and it seems an age
since I have written to some
of you. And now before
going any farther I want
to repeat a suggestion
and I will premise it by
the statement that those
of the family who are

away from home [u]very[/u]
rarely write to us but Mattie
says they write home quite
regularly. Now if you would
keep their letters and send
them on to us after you
have read them they
would do us just as well
as if they had been
written on purpose
for the "China market".
I hope you will think
favorably of this suggestion.
We were glad to hear
by the last letters that you
were able to walk down
to town again but Mattie
says she is afraid you
will stir about too much
and your foot get bad
again. Do try and be

careful. The pictures of you
and Father that Mattie
brought out we like so
much so [u]much[/u] better
than the little ones you
sent us awhile ago. You
do not Either of you look
as though you had
changed much since
we came away. The
chinese say that Father's
picture has a very happy
expression and that yours
is very pleasant. Most people
agree that I look like you.
It seems very funny to
think of John Caughey
and not funny Either but
sad for it does not seem
as though he can be a
suitable person for the place.

Mattie is sitting on one side of the
table in her brown merino dress with
blue necktie + blue ribbon on
her hair writing to Aunt Fay
She h[--i--]as commenced practicing
on the organ, Every day a very
good idea as she will find it
useful bye and bye, Dr Happer
has asked Lucy to teach his
children some Every day
and I presume she
will do so. They were expecting
to go home next spring, but
I presume if this arrangement
is made will not do so.
Miss Shaw's health is not
very good I am afraid
she has worked too hard.
We are going to try
and be careful of Mattie
and Lucy, and not
let them overdo.
