Canton China
My dear Frank, Feby 25th 1874.
We were very glad to hear
by the last letters from home that
you were feeling better . It must
take a great deal of patience to
enable you to bear all the
sickness you have had
lately. When the last letters
went I was away in the
country with Henry and Miss
Shaw. We were away seven days
and since we came back our
friends have had some fun at
our expense for spending the
time nearly all night and day
in sleeping "which was a fact."
We had a boat which was so
low that we could not stand
upright in it so we lay down
a good deal of the time and
then how could we help going
to sleep? Then it was raining +
cold most of the time and we
were more comfortable covered
up in bed than anywhere else
I was very much tired when we

started as it was just after the
schools closed and it seemed for
some time as if I could not get rested
We left here on Friday and it was
not unlike the next Tuesday after a
long nap in the day time that I
begun to feel rested. I am going
to inclose a copy of the plan of
Shameen which will show you some
thing of the location of our houses.
Shamien is an island on which the
merchants live and is just across the
canal from us There are a great
many fine houses on it like city
residences at home and it is laid
out as you see in street which
are lined with rows of trees principally
banyans. This is where we go to
exercise every day in theory once in a
long time in fact but I think we will
try and do better + go more regularly
in the future. We walk down the
Canal Road to the Bridge Road
and there cross over to the Bund
a road nicely paved walk shaded
with Banyan trees where one may
promenade up and down to his
heart's content. Hot summer evenings it
is very refreshing to get out there for
if there is any breeze anywhere we
will find it there. It is called
[Note: Written sideways in the margin of page two]
a mile and a half around it + a good walk all the way around
so sometimes we vary the programme by "[?swinging?] round the circle"
Matt says to tell you that she has twice walked around it
before breakfast, And now good night
Your aff sister
Hattie .
