Title

Letter from Hattie to Frank, September 14, 1875

Subject

Missionaries; School buildings; Postal Service; Mail Steamers

Description

In this letter to her brother Francis, Harriet is quite sure that the mail service is back to being every two weeks. They are expecting, among other new missionaries, Miss Galbraith to come with the McFarlands from Thailand. Harriet hopes that the next time that she receives a letter from home it says that Frank is getting better. She thinks that so far (5 weeks since the school was reopened) everything is going better than ever before. Henry adds a note at the top of the first page.

No news
this time
but ever
so much
love to all
from
Your aff
Bro
Henry

Canton China
Sept 14th 1875.
My dear Frank -
I have a few
minutes before breakfast
time that I will spend
in writing to you .
I wonder if you will not
be surprised to get another
mail so soon . This is a
"special occasion" we have
had three mails leave in
the last three weeks. I think
we are quite sure now of having
a semi-monthly mail, the
intermediate steamers of the
[?O?] and [?O?] line do not advertise
to carry the mailS but do
carry them nevertheless.
It is not at all an opposition
line the agent of the P.M.
is also the agent of the [?O?] + [?O?]

line so they seem connected
I suppose it is something
about getting another subsidy
from government. We are
looking for letters from
America again to-morrow to
come by the Belgiac of the
[?O?] & [?O?] line. We are looking
for missionaries too by the
same steamer the McFarlands
of Siam on their way back
and I presume they will
bring some new missionaries
with them for that field.
We have heard that a Mr
Murray has been appointed
to that country and Mr Dunlap
has been expected here on
his way to Siam for more
than a year. I presume
he is searching for Mrs Dunlap.
We are going to have an
addition to our circle
here too a Miss Galbraith
who is coming on with the

McFarlands to join the U.P.
Mission here. Mr Nevin's. She
will live with the Nevins -
I hope when we get our
letters to-morrow they will
bring us word that you
are still improving. I think
it must be very hard
indeed to be confined to
one kind of food -so long-
You must get very tired
of it. It seems too as though
it is something one would
get tired of very soon.
When you get these letters
I expect it will be beginning
to come cold weather.
We are congratulating
ourselves that now probably
the worst of our last
summer in China for the
present is over. The days
seem to fly now there
is so much that we
want to get finished before.

the end of the year. I can
hardly make myself believe
that five weeks have passed
since the School was
re-opened. Thus far this term
everything has gone on so
nicely better than ever
before. the teachers and
scholars all seem so
happy in being back
again and the new
building is so nice and
airy, much better in
this respect than the
former one. WE have
not got our full number
of scholars yet. our rooms
are arranged so that
we can take ten more
than we could before.
I have written this letter
at rail-road speed so
I dont know but I shall
have time for another
before break-fast. Ever your aff
Hattie -
