Title

Letter from Hattie to Em, August 14, 1874

Subject

Dreams; Love; Fashion design

Description

Harriet discusses not being able to wake up much earlier than 8am, and then describes a dream she had about getting her hair cut on the Sabbath. She talks about how much she misses everyone and tries not to think about the distance. She notes that it if Martha goes home in a few years it won't be long until Emily sees her, and that she won't be bringing anyone with her to "mar the visit". Lastly, she talks about Lucy anticipating a good man, and asks if Emily has a good pattern for a princess style dress.

It would be very nice if you would make a
[?spatterwork moth?] for Lucy like the one you sent "God Bless [illegible] ones."

Canton, China
Aug 14th 1874
My dear Em -
We are such late risers
that I never accomplish anything of
any account before our Eight-o-clock
breakfast. I often wish I could get
up every morning at four or five as
Henry use to but it ends in wishing.
Last night I had such a nice
dream of home. I thought it was
Sabbath day and just after dinner
and we all went out into the yard
and it seemed as though the grass
was so green and the shadows of
the trees looked so beautiful on the
soft green grass. [?Asam?] has just
come in to cut my hair. It is
quite a luxury to have her do it.
Tell Mary she does not do it quite
as well as she used to she generally
combs the front back so straight

that it makes my face look more
like the "full moon" than ever.
To-morrow will make ten months
since I left home - almost a year.
I so often think of what you wrote
in one of your letters that we will
try and not think about the long
time we must be separated but
that bye and bye I will come
again. I feel as though I never
told any of you how much I
love you - but I am sure we
know each others hearts. I am
so glad that you all seem so
much nearer to me than you
used to. If Mattie goes home in
a few years it will not be very
long until you will see her -
and she will not take anyB---
home with her to mar the visit.
Lucy seems very happy in her
anticipations. I imagine she is
going to have a good man. She
says every one says he is very
kind. I expect he is just about
such a man as Mr Atkinson.
She has been writing the secret to

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
Clara spoke of making up a dress in Princess style. If you
have a good
pattern of
that or of a
sacque a
new style +
it is quite
convenient
please send
some time.
We may want
to use them
next summer.
Lucy is going to
get a tailor to
come here and
make up her
dresses. And
now good-bye.
with ever so
much love -
yours ever
Hattie
