Canton China
Nov 9th 1874-
My dear Sarah,
I remember very well
that I have written to you by the
two last mails but I doubt not
you will pardon me for writing so
soon again when I tell you that
Mattie suggested my writing a letter
to send with hers for company are on
its long journey. WE are still
keeping Ladies' Home as "Brotherly
Kindness" has not yet "put in
an appearance." WE looked for him
yesterday but I presume he will
wait a day or two in Hongkong
and come from there with
Dr and Mrs Ellinwood whom
we are Expecting this week. We
are anticipating a nice visit from
them Henry likes them very
much. I think he must have
had a nice chance to visit
with them. WE were very glad

to know from he home letters
that your vacation rested you
and that the "tired look" went
away from your eyes. Do try
and not work so hard this
year. It seems as though
your work must grow Easier
as you get more experience.
Our schools are all in running
order again although some of the
scholars were very tardy about
coming back after vacation.
Sabbath before last was our
Communion. There were nine
received into the church three
from our schools, one woman
and two girls. If you have
the pictures to refer to they are
[?Atsui, Tsoichau and Akin?]
The two first named
seemed more as though they
had been taught by the Spirit
[?above?] then any other Chinese
converts I have ever [--kn--]known
They had neither of them

heard of Christianity until they
came here and they seemed
to accept it at once. Little
Fuykin is a dear little child as
I ever saw anywhere the child
of Christian parents she says
she cannot remember when
she did not love the Saviour.
Since these schools were opened
two years since there have
been nineteen of those
connected with them
received into the church.
WE feel that God's blessing
has indeed rested upon
them from the very
commencement and we
hope and pray that the
gracious influences of his Holy
Sprit may never leave us.
There are several more in
the schools that we hope are
Christians but are prevented
by the opposition of their friends.

Lillie Happer came home from
Japan a few weeks since. We
have heard indirectly that she
is going home next spring. I do
not know whether the report
is authentic or not. Miss Shaw
leaves tomorrow to go to Japan
in search of health. If she
should not recover there I do
not know but she may
go home and in that
case we shall feel quite
deserted. I hope when
Dr Ellinwood comes he
will see the necessity of
sending a new force of
single ladies to Canton.
Now I have written this at
rail-road speed I am
sorry it is such a poor
letter but you must take
it for "better or worse". With
love for Aunt + Cousins I am
Ever your aff sister
Hattie.
