Canton China -
Dec 14 /68-
My own dear Father,
When the mail
came this month and I had read
all your nice long letters I felt as
thought my head and heart was
full of material to make replies of
and I told Henry that this mail I
felt as if I must write to every one
but "I cant" comes in and I am
forced to yield to the tyrant and
I fear the "Japan" will carry back
a small mail to the Dear ones at
home. I had commenced a letter to
you with the intention of making
it a long one describing our missionary
friends here in Canton but I will
leave it to be concluded at some
future time. The reason why we
have less time than usual is first that
the "Japan" was some behind her time
in getting in and we never can feel
like beginning letters until we have
received yours and secondly she
brought us six missionary friends
on their way to Siam who are
now spending a few days here while
waiting for a ship to take them on.

Mr & Mrs Carrington of our Board at
Dr Kerr's Mr + Mrs Van Dycke also
of our Board at Mr Preston's and
Mr & Mrs Partridge of the Baptist
mission, who are staying with us
They have gone with Henry to-day
into the country to visit the
schools but I am now expecting
them back every minute.
I like them very much indeed.
She is from Boston he from NY.
I thought at first he might be related
to some of the Partridges mother
used to know. But dont you
think he was an officer in our
army and was within a mile
or two of "dear old Point of Rocks"
all the time that I was there.
Perhaps you will remember the
photo of a watch tower about a
half a mile or so from our hospital
that I used to have. That was
one of his stations. He preached
a good sermon to us last night
from the text "Endure hardness
as good soldiers" et cetera. Thursday eve
we are going to have a meeting
of all the missionaries at Mr Prestons.

Mrs Carrington brought me such a
nice present from Mr Loomis
five pictures one of them such
a beautiful engraving. "The Better
Land". He had written to me
about it before as one that he thought
a great deal of and I am so
glad to have it as a gift from him.
He tried to find the picture of a
horse but could not and I would
so much rather have this. It is
the picture of a girl with clasped
hands looking upward and is
perfect in every way. I have never
seen any thing of the kind more
beautiful. Tell the girls for me
that I had a nice present of a
pair of canary birds from Mr
Davis. He is one of the English
merchants & very pleasant gentlemen
has recently gone to Hongkong.
I will tell something more of them
in some future letter. He named
them Darby & Joan. I am constantly
worried for fear Henry's pet
(the yellow cat) will kill mine.

and I dont know what would
be the result of such a catastrophe.
To change the subject. It seems that
there is considerable doubt about
the union of [?O?] & N School. You
did not tell us exactly how you
feel but from what you did
write I gathered that you do
not favor it on the proposed basis.
It seems as though it would be nice
if all the churches were prepared
for it but that seems doubtful.
How many ministers are there in
our Presbytery now. How does Mr
Lewis get on in Cleveland. It must
have been a sad loss to that church
when Dr Taylor died. Is Mr
Hughes still able to get to the meetings
of Presbytery. If Dr Allen + wife
are still within speaking distance
do tell them that I do so long to have
their photographs, and please some
one give my love to Sarah Leitzell
I am trying to get time to write
to her and Libbie. And now good-bye.
That the richest blessings of our heavenly
Father may ever rest upon the loved
at home in the daily prayers of
Your own loving daughter Hattie.
