Canton China -
Jany 10th 1876.
Dear Ones at Home -
I have got up very
early this morning so as to
write you one more letter
from Canton. Only a few
hours now remain until we
shall bid Canton good-bye
for a season and turn
our faces homeward.
I cannot realize at all
that it is so - but I hope
that I shall when we
are once on our way .
We have been very busy
getting every thing arranged
to leave. Mattie will miss
us very much and we
feel badly to leave her but
she will b so busy when
the schools open a month

hence that it will keep
her from being lonesome I
hope - I hope you will
all write to her as much
as you can -
We are starting on just
the day that we hoped
months ago that we should
start the Monday after
the week of prayer
and perhaps you will
notice that it is Jany 10th
the anniversary of the
burning of the school-house.
Henceforth we shall
have something more
pleasant to remember in
Jany 10th than that
sad day - Mattie +
Lucy are going to Hongkong
with us, but I do not
suppose they will stay
more than a day or two.
I cannot help thinking

how soon we would reach
home if we were going by
the Pacific Mail.
But as we go by Bangkok
at any rate - it seems
best to go this way and
I feel sure that if we
did not go home
this way we would not
be very likely to come
out by way of England.
I am very glad that
Mattie and Lucy have
everything arranged so
nicely. Their work cannot
it seems to me fail to
be pleasant and I am
sure they will Enjoy it.
Then we have the
best of servants who will
do Every thing in their
power for them I know.
The Consul lives next door
to us now and he and

his wife are very pleasant and
kind so they are sure of
"Consular protection"
The two years before us
I am sure will seem
very short they will be
so filled up. I hope
that we shall hear
from you at Singapore.
We have been wishing
so much for another
mail before we leave
and it has been
due several days. Perhaps
we may meet it in
Hongkong. And now
I will send you my last
good-bye from Canton for
the present . When I write
you again from here our
visit home will be in the
past . You will think often
of and pray for Mattie I
know - and I hope she

[Note: following is written vertically on first page]
will be very happy here until we come back -
With warmest love for you all from
Your loving
Hattie

/
Mattie

Hattie
