Title

Letter from Hattie to Father, April 10

Subject

Mail steamers; Second Great Awakening; Revivals--United States; Missionaries; Travel; Prayer; Currency exchange

Description

Some letters did not arrive on time and Harriet thinks that the steamers are to blame, although it could have been the railroad's fault as well. A new steamer from England has just arrived and she hopes that it will solve the problem. Harriet is happy that her Father preached in the Guilford Church. Harriet writes about revivals in different parts of United States. In the last Missionary Conference, the president of the meeting stated his strong desire to see a revival in Canton. Henry leaves for one of his country trips today.

Canton China
April 10th
My dear Father,
Your letter of Feby 3d
came as you suggested that it
probably would with the letters
that were sent two weeks later.
Whether the rail-road was to
blame or not I do not know
but I am sure the steamers
were at fault for we had none
in as we expected the middle
of the month. A new steamer
has just come out from
England and I hope
they have enough now to
prevent any more such
interruptions. I was glad to
hear of your having preached
in the Guilford church and
also that the singers of our
family have gone back into
the choir, for it will be more
pleasant for them I should
think than to hear music
"executed" as I suppose it has been
sometimes.

The last mail brought us news
of extensive revivals in different
parts of the country in Princeton
college what a large number
has been gathered in.
It seems to us here that there
is more reason for Encouragement
than there has been in the
past and Mr Sites from Foochow
and Mr Hartwell from the
north of China both say that
it looks to them as though
the harvest time is near.
There seems to be a feeling
of stronger hope that a blessing
may be given soon among
the missionaries than usual.
At the last Missionary Conference
when the question of selecting
a subject for discussion for
the next meeting came
up the President rose and
expressed the strong desire that
he felt to see a revival in
Canton and that it might
be soon. It was immediately

[Note: Entire page written sideways]
suggested and warmly approved by all that
instead of selecting any subject the next Conference
should be devoted to conference and prayer for
the speedy outpouring of the Holy Spirit and [--the--] a
revival in the work here The next meeting is to be on
the fourth of June. We have written to several
different places where they are especially interested
in the Canton Mission to ask that on that day they
will unite their prayers with ours for a blessing upon
the work here. We shall know that you will remember
Canton and perhaps there are others in Guilford who
would unite with you and us on that day in prayer
for this part of the vineyard. I wanted to write to
Mattie + Sarah about it but it is so late that I think
I must ask if some of you at home will not do it
for me and if I had time I would like to write to
some of Mr Crane's folks [--about it--] but I do not
think I can write another letter to night or rather this
morning. Henry leaves for one of his country trips to-day.

[Note: Page written sideways]
We sent by Mr Sites the order for $100.00 The Exchange
is worth looking after I think he said as the rate of
exchange is now it would make it amount to
about $120.00

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on the third page]
With much love for all from
Your aff daughter Hattie

Sarah,
