Unsigned letter from Harriet to Sarah, May 24, 1878

Hattie reports having just left Dr. Happer's, and that their steamer is delayed. She wishes she could help Sarah enjoy vacation and comments that she wishes she and Sarah had sat on the grass/played outside more instead of sewing for foreign missionaries. She asks that Sarah tell Emily to write Harriet about Emily's injured thumb and Sarah's health. She tells Sarah to write her a long letter when she gets the chance, and concludes with news of the death of a Mr. Whiting of famine fever

Dear Sarah, May 24th 1878
We have just been in to
Dr Happer's- and have
learned that the steamer
does not leave as we expected
has been delayed so we shall
have another day for writing,
and I must send you a
few lines - It seems so nice to
think you will be at [u]home[/u]. How
I would like to help you enjoy
your vacation. I saw a sentence
in one of the papers that came
yesterday that made me think
of [u]ourselves[/u]. "A lazy fellow lying
down on the grass said Oh how I do
wish that this was called work
and well paid for" - Dont you
think under such conditions we
could make a [u]fortune[/u]? [u]Nevertheless[/u]
I would like it immensely. Sometimes
I half wish we had sat on the
grass and rode in the little wagon
more instead of sewing so much.

But "whatever is is best." We were
sewing for "foreign missionaries" and
if we had driven out more perhaps
I might have upset you and
broken all our necks instead
of Em's thumb. By the way wont
you have Em write me a letter and
tell me if her thumb is as well as
ever. And ask her to tell me
too how her sister Sarah's health
is exactly. We have been anxiously
looking for letters from you to
know what they propose to do
with you in Columbus. I dont
think I shall ever want to think
of Columbus if they make a
change in the [illegible]. You
must when you have had time
to get rested write me a good
long letter and tell me all
about our friends there Jennie
[?Shrom?] Miss Brown Mrs Babbitt

from her lameness? The girls
are having Evening prayers.

We have just heard tonight of the death of Mr Whiting who came
out with Mattie + Lucy
died of famine fever.
