Letter from Hattie to Mary, August 23, 1879

Subject

School buildings; Travel; Mail steamers; Health

Description

Harriet tells Mary that they did not get the estimates they needed so they do not know about the school building yet. Some ladies in Bloomfield sent Mattie $50 for her 5-6 week vacation. In this vacation, for which she left this morning, Mattie will visit her friends in Amoy and Mrs. Ashmore in "up there". The next steamer is delayed by 10 days. Dr. Kerr is a better housekeeper than Mrs. Kerr. Mattie's health is better than last year.

Canton China
Aug 23d 1879.
My dear Mary,
The last home
mail brought your letters
written in July. We did
not get the estimates as
we hoped that we should
so that we do not yet
know about that school
building. Mattie had
a letter from her ladies
in Bloomfield telling
her that they had sent
on $50.00 for her
vacation trip. The same
mail brought a letter from
Mrs Ashmore urging her
to come up there and
make a visit and as
she had already had
a very pressing invitation

from the friends in
Amoy she at once
decided to accept them
and visit both places
and in pursuance of her
plan she left Canton
this morning. I expect
she will be away for five
or six weeks. I shall have
a grand chance for writing
letters and hope I can
bring up arrears in my
correspondence. I am
sadly behind hand have
hardly written any letters
since last Summer.
We have just heard tonight
that the next steamer
is deferred from the 1st to
the 11th of September
so you will have to wait
a little for your China
letters. I wish we

could have a regular
mail but there does not
seem to be much probability
of it. It will only be a
little while now until
Mrs Kerr comes. She will
be a living epistle from
you and a very voluminous
one I am sure. Dr
Kerr invited us all over
there to breakfast a few
days since, he has
been keeping house some
time. He is a far better
homekeeper than Mrs
Kerr, has everything very
nice and orderly and
neat. Still he fortunately
is under the delusion that
she is all right in every
respect. It seems very
nice to see how much

pains he is taking to
have every thing in
perfect order for her when
she comes back. If it would
only keep so. He is longing
to have them back. We always
though Hattie was
a nice little girl. She is a
very good scholar too has
passed examinations very
well in Granville. Dr Kerr's
brother there would be very
glad to keep her he is
principal of the Female
Seminary there. I hope
Josie may improve if he
falls into the right hands
I am sure it will be
better for him than
being with his mother.
It has been very warm
here to-day thermometer

[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
now at 9 o clock at night is standing at 90°
I am afraid
Mattie will
have a hot
time in
Hongkong.
She is very
well now
much
better than
last year.
Goodnight
Yours aff
Hattie
