Letter from Hattie to Sarah, March 20, 1880

Missionaries; School buildings

Harriet is glad about the shawls that she sent to Sarah. She tells her sister that Mrs. Plumb is going back home and she is bringing a little boy with her. He is going to cousin Eliza Walker's home for missionary children. The plans for the new school building are underway. The new building is funded by thank-offerings.

My dear Sarah,
We were very glad
in the last mail from
home to find a letter from
you. Do you know you
are not keeping your
promise to write [u]often[/u] to
us, and I am afraid
I am not doing much
better. I want always to feel
as near as we did when we
were in the dear old home
together. You will soon be
there again. I was reading
over the other evening the
beautiful lines you copied
and sent to me when I
was in San Francisco do
you remember them?

How I wish I could see and
talk with you a little while.
Mattie has written to you
about Mrs Plumb. It did
seem so nice to think she
was going right to Columbus
and will see you so soon.
I quite envied her. You
will find her a very
pleasant acquaintance I
am sure I recommended
you to cultivate her acquaintance
if you have an opportunity
and she expects to have her
house in Columbus while
in America. M- has told
you I suppose about the shawls
We were so glad to have such
a good opportunity to send them.
We told her if she had
to pay any duty you
would make it right
with her. A little boy who

is going home with her is
going to Cousin Eliza Walker's
[u]home[/u] for missionary children.
I am glad you had
such a nice visit with dear
Cousin Horace & Nancy. When
you write give us their address
if you have it. I do not
know whether we could
ever get time to write to
them or not but I would
like to. Mattie says she
does not know whether
she wrote you anything
about our new school building
or not. The plans are in
the hands of contractors
now and they are making
their estimates so they will
be ready to begin work
in a few days. It is to
be built with thank-offerings

that is nice isnt it? A
number of ladies are giving
now in this [u]tenth[/u] year of
the Womans Work a thank
offering of 100 dollars each,
and they are going to use
the first that come in for this
object. My pen went through
the paper there and mark
the result. Tell dear Mrs
Moore if you see her how
glad we are about our school
building and give her my
love and tell her I often
think of her and would
love to write, to her if I had
more time. I am owing Mrs
[?Dumm?] a letter. Give ever so
much love to Aunt Fay Cousins
Gilbert Mary and the
children. I havnt much
time for the mail goes in a
few minutes. Write to us
