Title

Letter from Hattie to Sarah, June 5, 1880

Subject

Birthdays; Disease; Letters; School buildings; Marriage--China; Homesickness

Description

In this letter to her sister Sarah, Harriet wishes her a happy birthday although she is late. On Sarah's actual birthday, they received letters from home but Mattie could not read them because she was too sick. Harriet writes that if she could afford it, she would go home to visit before the new building is finished. It is a very grand building, she writes. Fung Kin, the young woman engaged to a California man, was just married and is going to teach at the school. Harriet asks about the animals at home.

Canton China
June 5th 1880.
My dear Sarah,
This is for a
birthday letter although as
you will observe the date
does not indicate it. I
thought of you a great
deal however on your
birthday, hoped it was for
you a pleasant happy
day and the beginning of
a year, that would
come to you laden with
blessings rich in the "best
gifts. I intended to write
to you on Wednesday
the 2nd and might have
done so if I had not
delayed until evening and
then I did to get it done.

Mattie was very miserable
that day. Although we have
Chinese women who come in
to take care of her I have
been up more or less with
her every night for the past
week and a half.
The home letters came
on your birthday. That
was very pleasant only
Mattie was feeling so badly
we did not tell her anything
about it and I had to
read them by piece meal
as I could. Before this
reaches Seville you will
be at home. How I wish
I could go home and
spend the summer vacation
with you. I told M
the other day that if I
had a fortune I thought

I would go home and
make a little visit before
we open school in the
new building. It begins to
look quite grand it is 93 feet
long and 36 high so the
front is quite imposing,
resembling the D & D Inst
as much as you could
expect a building that cost
3500 to resemble one that
cost 650,000 The wood work
inside will be painted just as
well grained in two colors
in imitation of oak and
black walnut the Chinese
do it beautifully. Perhaps
Mother will remember
the little girl Fung Kin who
wrote her a letter & to Father a while
ago. She has just been
married to an assistant

who has recently come
over from California.
We have engaged her
services to teach the preparatory
department. She is very
young but a wonderful
girl in her gift of "preaching
the gospel." We often
wish you could see our
pleasant house. It is much
larger and finer than
the "home on the hill" but not
one hundredth part as dear.
I hope you will have a
very pleasant summer.
I wonder if Prince &
Scott will be in working
order yet. Mattie's affections
for the four footed friends
all go to Watch. I hope she
will see him before very long,
& that he will have more

[Note: Written vertically on first page]
kindly feelings towards a China Missionary than
Roses of old.
With every
good wish
& hoping
that each
new year
of your
life may
be happier
& better than
any that
have preceded
it Ever yr loving
Hattie.

Mattie
