Letter from Hattie to "Dear Ones at Home", December 31, 1880

Harriet welcomes in the new year. It is the fourth time she has watched the old year out since she arrived back in China five years ago. She talks about Mr. Cyrus Field and his wife who have plans to visit the school while in Canton. He invented the ocean telegraph. A former missionary, Mr. Wynkoop, invited them to go to visit a wealthy Chinese family on the other side of the river. She concludes by wishing her family well.

Dear Ones at Home -
I will write to you
all at once in this last
letter that I shall write
in 1880. The last hour of
the old year is passing
this is the fourth time that
I have watched the old
year out since I came
back to China five
years tonight since I sat
in the rocking chair in
the south chamber and
heard the bells in town
ringing their welcome
to 1877-- I must tell
you of a pleasant visit
we have had to-day which
I think will make us ever

remember with pleasure the
last day of 1880. Mr Cyrus
Field + his wife are spending
a little time in Canton
and this morning we received
a note telling us they would
come and visit the school -
this afternoon. We had
been hoping to see them
and were very much
pleased that they felt
inclined to come and
visit the school -- We had
it all put in prime order
building scholars and all
and told the scholars that
a very distinguished man
was coming. You know
it is to him the world
is indebted for the
ocean telegraph . He
is a very pleasant man
reminded me of Dr Seelye

They seemed very much
interested in the school
and pleased with its
appearance-- Mr Wynkoop
formerly a missionary
to India he was there
eight years and his Mother
a lady of eighty two also
came-- Afterwards they
invited us to go with
them to visit a wealthy
Chinese family and a
temple on the other
side of the river an
invitation which we were
very glad to accept so
we spent the afternoon
with them and had
a very pleasant visit.
Dr Field spoke in the
warmest terms of the
work we are trying to do here

and both seemed to
feel so pleased that we
are so nicely situated and
such a good opportunity
for work-- Altogether it
was a very pleasant
afternoon This evening Mr
+ Mrs Henry came in
and we had a nice little
visit with them - Tomorrow
we shall have a busy
day receiving calls --
1880 seems to have passed
very quickly. I will send
to you all my warmest most
earnest wishes that you may
have a [u]happy[/u] new year and
that the coming year maybe
more filled with happiness and
bring to you all richer
blessings than any that have
preceded it. Father's watch tells
me that it is almost midnight so
I will say goodnight and write
