Canton China
June 1st 1881.
My dear Mattie -
I wonder where
you are spending your
birthday. Somewhere in
the Pacific Ocean I expect.
I wrote a few lines for
Kittie to give you to-day
and I doubt not she
will remember to do so.
It seems strange to write
you a birthday letter
and think that you will
be at home to receive it.
I have thought many
times to-day about a
year ago. I remember
that day so distinctly I
suppose because it was
your birthday and altogether
such a miserable day.

I hope this will be a happier
birthday for you and the
commencement of a happier
year. I am sure it will be a
very precious one to you if
it is like my year at
home. I hope you will
soon get well and strong
and do and get a great
deal of good. This evening
Conference met at Mrs
Henry's. There were a large
number about forty present
all the missionaries except
Mr Parkes who was kept
at home with an attack
of rheumatism from which
he has been suffering the
past three weeks is getting
a little better now.
Mr Pearce read a
paper about the best

method of presenting
Christianity to the Chinese.
It was very good. Mr Henry
laughed a little after Conference
about Mr Fulton + Mr White
giving the missionaries the
benefit of their experience
after six months in China.
Mr Henry has never spoken
in Conference yet.
Our Henry has to take Dr
Graves' place now and
set the ball in motion
Dr Carrow came to Mrs
Henry's disgust he did not
stay to tea. I think it was
funny for him to come
without an invitation when
he is not on speaking terms
with them. He has
just been appointed
Vice Consul. Mr Scruggs
is going home to bring

out his wife and daughters
I suppose. Everyone is
rather disgusted at the appointment.
Our Presbyterian brethren had
an indignation meeting + appointed
Dr Kerr + Mr White to go
and interview the Consul
about it but there is no
help for it now. They were
surprised to find Mr
Cunnningham recommended
him. I suppose he did not
want it himself and
there really are not many
who are eligible. I shouldn't
be surprised if Dr Carrow
does not stay long. If Mrs
Carrow goes home as she
expects to this summer
I imagine it is doubtful
whether she comes back
again. Well goodnight
Many returns of the day
Yours affly Hattie
