Canton China
Aug 30th 1881.
My dear Sarah,
I am glad to
have the assurance that
you are going to do better
in the letter writing line.
Only your summer vacation
is so soon over if you go
back afterwards to Columbus
and to your "old custom"
I shall not get many
letters after all. However
I know I hav'nt much
room to find fault for
I have not written to you
very faithfully but I have
thought of you if I did not
answer the letters I did'nt
receive. I am so glad
to hear that you look

"awful well". You must all
have a nice time this summer
Dont let the colts suffer
for want of exercise. I am
glad old Ned keeps pretty
well. I suppose the fear
of being sold to a Circus Company
again hangs over his head
perpetually. It is nice that
dear Cousin Gilbert Mary
and all are so happy in
their new home. I hope
you can go to visit them
sometime It would
give you all so much
pleasure. I think the
yard must look very pretty
with the new fence. Has
the home kept white or does
it need another coat
of paint? Never mind
if the fact that "we girls"

helped paint the home
is a public secret. We had
a good time doing it. I had
such a time with the painter
here in the school-building that
I really wanted to paint it
myself and I have often
since wished it were possible
to get here the nice paint
+ brushes that we can at
home and then teach
someone to do it in our way.
They put the paint on with
a little wad and [?dart?] their
hands all over. They can
do it well enough however
if they are a mind to I
think Dr Kerr is having
as bad a time with his
painters for the new Hosptl
ward as we did. It
is nice that you were
home in time for the

anniversary. I suppose
none of you went to Wooster.
I imagine John Happer did
not get to Seville as he did
not write of going there and
wrote from Pa ---- You
must excuse this shabby
paper see I am
economizing. I must tell
you those large envelopes you
have sent from home a few
lines seem to be of very poor
paper although they are so
thick and get almost worn
out on the journey over. Twice
the letters dropped out at the
end without opening it at all,
but none seemed to be lost.
one the way for which I was
very thankful. Well
good-bye for this time
with much love from
Your aff Hattie -
