Description
Hattie tells her father about how she and Miss Butler are stuck indoors writing letters due to the rain outside. They celebrated Miss Butler's birthday on the 23rd by going out to a village they recently opened a station. They stayed and listened to the lessons for both the girls' and boys' schools. Since the station is about ten miles away, she plans to go about once a month. Miss Whilden leaves next week to go home after ten years in China. Dr. and Mrs. Graves were able to visit her father and speak highly of it. They have been able to have their communion services in the second church. She continues by listing off other missionaries.

March 25th 1882
My dear Father -
Miss Butler and
I are improving this rainy evening
when no one can come in
and we cannot go out in
writing letters. We have had
so little rain this spring that
she begins to think the stories
we tell about the rainy season
have not much foundation.
Day before yesterday was
her birthday and we celebrated
it by going out to a village where
we have recently opened a station.
Mr Henry went out and
held a communion service
there on my birthday Sabbath
March 5th and we
planned to go then but it
rained so were obliged
to give it up. So we concluded
to go on hers instead. We
had a very nice time
After hearing the lessons in both
the boys and girls schools I
discussed to the assembled
villagers men women and
children. I took for my text
From that time Jesus began
to preach saying Repent for
the kingdom of Heaven is at
hand. I think it seemed
to me more like preaching a
sermon than anything I
have ever done. I suppose
because there were so many
men there among them the
school teacher who was in
Dr Happer's Training School
for several years. We
started in the morning at 1/2 past
eight and got back a little
before six. It is about ten
miles away. I expect to
go about once a month
In the evening after we
came back we went down
to take tea at Mrs Graves' Her
birthday and Miss Butler's
come on the same day so
we celebrated them together.
Then little Miss Whilden starts
for home next week after having
been hard at work in China
for ten years. Her home
is down in South Carolina so I
hardly expect you will
see her in Ohio. I am
very glad Dr and Mrs
Graves could make you a visit
they seem to remember it
with so much pleasure and
feel such an interest in you all.
Last Sabbath was our
Communion Season in the
Second Church. Eleven
were received six from the
hospital and five from
the school, two women
and three girls. Another
woman from the school
is to be received into the
First Church Dr Happer's
tomorrow. The work seems
unusually encouraging now
every where. Several of our
missionaries are now in the
country. Mr Simmons + Mr
Thorn a converted merchant
who is laboring in connection with
the Bible Society have gone westward
Henry + Mr Masters {Wesleyan Missy} [Missionary]
have gone South. Mr White
and Mr Fulton North west to
Linchan and Mr Henry
to the North. Our mission
has succeeded in renting a
place in Lin Chau and doubtless
Mr and Mrs White with
Dr and Mrs Thomson will
go there in the Autumn.
I think it would in many
respects be exceedingly nice
to live in such a place. In
Canton it seems as though
the time is so take up I am
sure it would be different in that respect.
[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
Well now
I must
say goodnight
for this time.
This makes
six letters I
have written
since eight-o-
clock this eve
and it is not
late now so I
think I have
done pretty well.
Ever your loving
daughter
Harriet.
