Description
Harriet tells her sister Martha that the spring has been quite nice and now it is starting to feel warm. She gives Mattie an update on many of the missionaries including Mr. and Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. Happer, Mrs. Graves, Mr. Faber, Miss Stein who is now sick. Mr. Marris is also sick but as soon as he is able he is going off to Japan. Mr. Pearce and Miss Gittins are to be married in Hong Kong. Dr. Carrow was going to go home but now must stay since Consul Scruggs is not coming back and is instead going to Panama. Mr. Nye may inherit the position in the end. Little Jamie Henry had an attack of croup though luckily he recovered the next day. Harriet hopes their new chapel will be done soon. Dr. Williams is going to give $1500 towards the cause.

My dear Mattie -
These letters I
expect will surprise you as
we sent only a week since.
We are hoping to get our
letters to-day, and I hope
to-day's mail will bring better
news from you than the
last mail did.
It is beginning to be warm
here now but we have had
a very comfortable spring
so far. Our meeting last
evening seems very thinly
attended. Mr + Mrs [?Simmons?]
Mrs Happer and Henry +
his family are in the country.
Mrs Graves was not feeling
able to come Miss Stein is
sick is staying at Dr Kerr's
just now for a few days.
Mr Marris has been ill
for several weeks, and
does not seem to be getting
better very fast. As soon as
he is able he is going to
Japan. Mr Pearce spends
a good deal of his time at
Fatshan with Miss Gittins
They are to be married in a
few weeks will go to HongKong
for the wedding. We hear
that when the Chalmers
came back in the autumn
they may come to Canton.
That would be very nice
indeed to have them back
again. [?Jamy?] enjoys being
at home in Scotland so
thoroughly. It seems so
nice that he having such
a pleasant time.
Dr Carrow was expecting
to go home this month but
hers received word that
Consul Scruggs is not
coming back but is going to
Panama so he will have
to stay in the Consulate until
he can get a substitute
Possibly [u]Mr Nye[/u] may inherit
the position temporarily How
delighted he would be.
A few nights since Mrs
Henry's little Jamie had an
attack of crup. Dr Kerr
was rather anxious about him
but he was all right next
day. Her children are
all very nice. Helen is a
very pretty interesting little
girl, but is not always a
model in departments. She
undertook to take Jamie
to church a few Sabbaths ago
and the little fellow climbed
up in the pulpit and got
all the hats and put on
at once and clamored
for his papa to take
him so she had to
carry him off home.
At our Chinese service
yesterday the chapel was
crowded. I hope we
will soon have our new
one. I am sorry Dr
Kerr will have the job of
building again, but it will
be very nice to have a large
chapel. I suppose I have
written that Dr Williams
is going to give $1500 the
medical society $1000
and they have asked
the board for $500 so
that will make quite
a good sum and I hope
we will have a chapel
large enough for all. Mrs
Kerr had a letter from Josie
by last mail so she feels better.
Mr Faber seems quite at
home over there he has
two fine large rooms for his use the
one opposite the parlor and the
one over it and stays in his

study most of the time. Now I must close so
as to send
the letters
up to the
office I

will bring
back the
mail from
