Canton China
May 1st 1882
My dear Clara -
I wonder if you will
notice that the days of the
year come on the same days
of the week this year that
they did in 1876. Your
birthday that year was
on Sabbath as it is this
and I remember well our first
Sabbath at home To-day
has been filled up here with
the usual routine of Sabbath
duties and this evening we
have had an excellent sermon
from Mr Henry on the text
"Behold I stand at the door
and knock" etcetera Mr Henry
always preaches such good
sermons. The last time
we sung tonight was Enwood

I always like to sing that
because it make me think
of home. I suppose we shall
not sing it again as we
will have our new books before
next Sunday and it is not
in them. The books are in
HongKong. Dr Kerr hoped to
get them up yesterday I hoped
he would so that we could
begin to use them on your
birthday. I wonder if you
have seen the book "Spiritual
Songs" by Dr Robinson. I
hope every one will like it
it seems as though it has
such a variety that there
ought to be something to
suit the tast of every one.
Our service in the Hospital Chapel
this morning was well
attended. We had quite a
time to get seats enough

for all the women some
had to sit in the operating
room where I dont suppose
they could hear at all one
old woman sat on the
edge of the pulpit platform.
Dr Kerr expects to begin building
the new chapel in September.
We will have vacation then
and there will not probably
be so many in the hospital
as at present. I hope when
that is finished there will
be plent of room for every
one. I saw Henry for a
few minutes to-day and
asked him if he remembered
the anniversary days the
17th of May etcetera and he
said yes indeed. I was
at the time mistaken thinking
today was the 20th but when
I counted again I found
this is your birthday It is

just getting fairly commenced
with you now. I hope
it will be for you in
everyway a pleasant day
a day of rest and that
it may be the commencement
of a happy useful year.
I rejoice in thinking that
every passing year is
bringing nearer the time
when we shall all be
gathered home to "go no more
out forever" there we shall
be "ever with the Lord"
But we have a great deal
to make us happy and
willing to stay in this world
all the days of our appointed
time. It is between nine
and ten here now so you
will soon be going to the
morning service. I wish Calvin
would give such a sermon
as Mr Henry has given us --
[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
With much
love and
all good
wishes pure
Your loving sister
Hattie

Enwood,
