Title

Letter from Hattie to Sarah, May 23, 1882

Subject

Woman physicians; Marriage; Interpersonal relations--Religious aspects--Wesleyan church

Description

Harriet writes to Sarah in the evening and talks about the pleasant weather they have been having. She mentions the Wesleyan mission and there are only two of them left. She says they have been quarreling and treated their single ladies quite badly. Mr. Pearce is to be married tomorrow in Hong Kong and will go to Macau for a few days. Mrs. Kerr had a letter from Josie. He says that he is ready to reform and so Mrs. Kerr wants him to go back to Wooster. Harriet mentions Jennie Shrum and how Miss Archibald is now Mrs. Maten since getting married. There will hopefully be another woman joining them soon since Miss Butler is studying medicine and there is word that Miss Niles MD will be appointed to Canton.

Canton China
May 23d 1882
My dear Sarah
When these letters reach
home I hope you will
be there so I will put in
a few lines for you. The
clock has just struck seven
so I must soon send the
letters off. It has been
raining during the night +
is perfectly cool and pleasant
this morning. We are having
such a nice comfortable
year not any hot weather
yet and May is almost
over. We are hoping to
get the home mail to-day
it has been longer than
usual on the way. I
hope it will bring good
news for us all.

I feel sorry for the
Wesleyan mission they seem
so reduced, only two left in
Canton now and it has
been such a strong mission.
They have had such a
bad time quarreling and
they treated their single
ladies when they had
them very badly.
They are hoping Mr
Whitehead will come
back. I should not be
surprised if he does They
certainly need some old
missionary to look after
the work. Mr Pearce
of the London Mission
is to be married tomorrow
they are to be married
in HongKong. and go
to Macao for a few

days. Mrs Kerr had a
letter from Josie by the
last mail and he professes
to be tired of the way he
has been doing and
ready to reform I hope
it will last. Mrs Kerr wants
him to go back to Wooster.
I think they will have
a high opinion there of
missionaries' children.
I wonder if Jennie
Shrum will succeed in
her plans for staying at
home. Has that man
ever married any one.
We had a letter a few
days ago from Miss
Archibald now Mrs
Maten telling us about
their wedding. They
had quite a grand time
and it is all over
they seem very happy.

Some of them at home
especially Miss Peabody
of Oxford have written a
great deal about her leaving
her work to get married.
But she has not left the
work at all and has gone
to a place where she will
be able to reach far more
than she could in Siam.
We see from the papers
that quite a large number
of missionaries are offering
themselves to the Board
I wonder if we shall
get any more recruits I
suppose they will send a
lady without fail when
they know Miss Butler is
studying medicine We
hear that Miss Niles M D
is appointed to Canton They
want her very much in
NanKing She is a schoolmate

[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
of Mrs Whitiny who is there. It seems as though
she ought to go
there the work
is just observing
them + it
seems as
though she
is more
needed there
than here.
With much love
Yours Affly
Hattie -
