Letter from Harriet to Father, August 10, 1882
Subject
Budget; Chapels; Building--Planning; Christianity--19th century; Hot weather conditions
Description
Hattie expresses her disappointment at next year's estimates for the mission. They expected to get $200 for the mission and $1000 for Henry's new chapel. They might build a new chapel anyway with contributions from Dr. Williams, the Medical Society, and the local fund. The second church is charging a subscription. So far they collected $400: $300 from foreigners and $100 from natives. Regardless, Harriet would prefer the chapel to be built entirely with Christian money. She thinks that $4000 would suffice. An architect from Hong Kong drew some plans but Harriet does not like them because they do not look like a church. The weather is hotter than ever.

My dear Father,
A few letters came
this morning from the home
land and among them
one from Dr Ellinwood
about the estimates for next
year. They are rather
[?disemiaying?] they have been
obliged to grant considerably
less than was asked for,
and nothing for either the
chapel here or for Henry's
in the city. We certainly
expected the $200.00 asked
for and hoped that
Henry would get $1000.00
for he needs a new
chapel very much the
old one is so dilapidated
But what seems most
[?disemiaying?] is that the
regular receipts from
contributions have been less
than at any year before since
the reunion. I presume we
shall get our chapel here
without very much difficulty
$1300 from Dr Williams [?$1000?]
from the Medical Society
and perhaps there can be
[?200?] or 1000 from the Local
Fund. A Subscription is being
taken up in the 2nd church
and there are $400.00 already
subscribed 300 by foreigners
and 100 by the natives.
Perhaps subscriptions will
be solicited in Hong Kong,
but I would much prefer
if it could be built entirely
with Christian money.
There is old material in
the present chapel which
will amount to about $200.00
and I think $4000.00
is quite enough to build it
well. It is to be [?two?] stories
but it will not be very much
longer nor very much higher
than Dr Happer's chapel
which was built for [?2500?].
A Hong Kong architect has
drawn some plans but I
do not fancy them at all.
The front as he makes it is
just like all our dwelling houses
with a verandah above & below.
I want very much that
it should look like a church.
I have drawn a plan hastily
which Mr & Mrs Henry Miss
Butler & I like much
better, and I think Dr
Kerr will. After the
school is out and I have a
little time I will draw it out
carefully & see if it will not be
cheaper than the Hong Kong plan
for which the builders want
$6000.00 We have been having
very hot weather here Mr Henry
says the hottest he has known in
China & Mr Cunningham says
hotter than it has been for
eight years. The thermometer
rose one day in my room on the
west wide of the home to 100°
one night at midnight it was
94° The heat seems very different
from what it does at home when
you have the thermometer at 99°
I dont know why the thermometer
does not feel it [?burn?].
I am busy getting ready for
the end of the school will
try and have a little examination
this year, and invite the
[Illegible] to be present.
Give my warmest love to all I
will answer Emily's good by letter
another time. Your loving daughter,
Harriet

Cunningham
