Harriet tells Martha that Mr. and Mrs. Henry have just arrived from Hong Kong and they brought a chair for her. Dr. Happer wants to prevent Dr. Stubbert from marrying Mary. Harriet agrees with Dr. Happer because she thinks that none of them had feelings for each other. According to Harriet, Dr. Stubbert must have thought that he had to get married before becoming a missionary and Mary just wanted to get married "to an extent that is positively disgusting." Miss Lola Tiffany will marry Mr. Pruett who is a Baptist, so Harriet wonders what people at home will think. Harriet writes that Mrs. Perkins said that Mattie was a really good missionary.

My dear Mattie -
I will write a little
more to you before the
mail goes. Mr + Mrs
Henry have just come
home from Hongkong and
you will be glad to know
that they have bought a
chair for me so I can
keep my own chair
hereafter. Mrs Henry is
very glad to get back to
her own home. She is like
me likes to stay at home
Miss Butler and I thoroughly
agree in this also but we
find it almost impossible
to get any of our evenings
at home although we
positively refused to join
any "reading circle" -
Dr Stubbert is her but is
only going to stay a few
weeks and will then go
back to Nan King.
suppose he and Mary will
not be married at present.
Dr Happer [u]as usual[/u]
has put his foot down
upon it this time because
of Dr Stubbert's delicate
health and because he
was engaged to Miss
Maten. I have no doubt
he was wise in breaking
that off. for I dont believe
there was a particle of
attachment on either side.
They never met but three
times. I suppose he thought
he must get married before
he could be a missionary
and she wants to get married
or at least admits more
freely that she does in
her letters to Miss Butler -
than any one else I ever
heard of to an extent that
is positively disgusting. I never
could quite like her asking
in your letter if [u]Dr Kerr[/u] was
likely to go home soon. If
she remains in Tung chow
it will be a matter of indifference
to her how long Dr Kerr stays
in Canton and he can
remain in his hospital in
peace. Dr + Mrs Graves
admire her exceedingly but
she was very interesting to them
on account of her [u]breaking
heart[/u]. There is a young
Baptist brother up in Tung chow
that I have little doubt
that she would marry
if he would ask her and
I presume he would
like it but he has a girl
in America to whom he is [u]partly[/u]
engaged. I wrote to you did
I not that Miss Lola Tiffany
who came out last autumn is
to be married the 6th of Sept
to a [u]Baptist[/u] Mr Pruett.
I wonder what her constituents
at home will think. Will
you be going out this Autumn
lecturing on Missions Did I
ever tell you what Mrs Perkins
wrote that you made such
a strong impression whereever
you went that over + over she
heard from different places
that you were "the most interesting
missionary we ever had address
us", "she told us just the
things we wanted to know"
"she interest our ladies
exceedingly" et cetera et cetera --
Miss Whilden is busy speechifying
I wonder if you will come
back together. Her address
at home is Greenville S lea
I have just written to her

I have

expecting
a letter

Perkins for
months. We
concluded they
are not going
to send
any lady
out for school
work this
year.
