Title

Letter from Hattie to Edward, November 28, 1882

Subject

Chloroform; Leg--Wounds and injuries; Operations, Surgical; Marriage; Physicians

Description

Harriet has finally received word from Edward in regards to his injured leg. He seems to be doing better. She hopes that the leg has not shortened due to muscle contraction. Dr. Kerr uses chloroform quite regularly with his operations and was surprised that Edward was not given any. The doctors at home do not seem to use it as much as those abroad. Miss Butler and Dr. Niles often accompany Dr. Kerr when he does his operations and rounds of the ward each day. Harriet talks about the newly married missionaries and those who are bachelors, this includes Mr. Mayne, Mr. Watson, Dr. Riddal, Dr. Anderson.

Canton China
Nov 28th 1882
My dear Edward,
Your letter of Oct 21st
came this morning. "It
is an ill wind that blows
nobody good" so as one of the
fruits of your affliction I
have a letter from you
by two mails in succession.
Perhaps you will get in
the way of writing by every
mail so that you cannot
stop. Just five weeks no
nearly five & a half have
passed since your
letter was written so I
hope by this time your

leg it able to do duty
again. I am so anxious
to hear how it it when
you begin to use it. I
hope you will not find
it shortened enough to
make any [?matinal?]
difference. You might
perhaps have a little
difference in your shoes.
Dr Graves explained to me
how it might be shortened
some by the contraction of
the muscles but said it
depended on the success
of the appliances I am
sure Dr Bigham will
do the best he possibly

can. Dr Kerr seemed
surprised that they did
not give you chloroform
but I do not think doctors
at home use it as much
as he does. He uses it
every day and does not
seem in the least afraid
to use it with any one.
He does have some of the
most dreadful operations.
Dr Niles and Miss Butler
go over to witness them and
make the rounds of all
the wards with him
every morning. They
have quite a [?homefull?]
over at Dr Kerr's, now
Two newly married
missionaries and one

bachelor. The [?hatter?]
Mr Mayne came out from
England in charge of
four missionary brides One
he left at Singapore & the
other three met their bridegrooms
and were married in
Hong Kong. One is from Amoy
Mr Watson, one from Swatow
Dr Riddal, & Dr Anderson
from Formosa where Mr Mayne
goes. I have not seen
any of them yet I
enclose in this a handkerchief
which I intended to send
by last mail but concluded
I would wait and see
whether those Miss Miles & Miss
Butler sent were received
at the Post Office without
[?demons?] or not. Any now
with much love & sympathy
I remain ever yr aff sister Hattie

Graves
Mr Watson,
