Title
Letter from Hattie to Mattie, February 6, 1883
Subject
Christian education of girls; Leg--Fractures; Letters; Women missionaries
Description
Harriet writes to her sister that she does not have a letter of Martha's to respond to, but hopes she is getting better. Harriet also hopes Edward's leg does not give him too much trouble. Dr. Kerr says his recovery may be tough. Their son Josie is still not writing to his parents. Their daughter Hattie is returning to the US in two years. The Jackson's are back in Nam King. Harriet asks that Mattie brings another missionary with her when she comes back if she does. Their school is currently on vacation. The teacher of the day school, Ayan, is the best teacher Harriet has ever had.

My dear Mattie,
You do not write
to me very often so I do not
think I have any letter
from you to answer
The last letters from home told
me that you were in Medina.
I hope that you are feeling
much better before this. By
the time this reaches you
it will be spring almost time
for the Leaves to come out.
I hope Edward will by that
time find his broken leg
is as good as new I should
think if it is only half an
inch shorter than the other
there might easily be that
difference made in his
boots so that it would remedy
any lameness. If he comes
off as well as the last letters
seemed to think he would
it seems wonderful. Dr Kerr
says it is very difficult to
manage when there is both
dislocation and a fracture
so Dr Bigham must have
done very well indeed.
Dr & Mrs Kerr do not hear
anything from Josie except
indirectly. I do not see as
one of the girls wrote how it
even happened that Dr Kerr
has such a son. Little
Hattie is a comfort to her
parents at any rate. She
does not seem very strong.
I think they are planning
to go to America in about
two years. I know I have
written this before but never
mind. Mr & Mrs Jackson
have come back to China
They were in Hong Kong last
week but did not come up
to Canton. Mr Masters
saw them there. He says
that Mr Jackson is wonderfully
improved. We told him it was
his "American culture." It is odd
is it not they are going to be
stationed in Nam King,
so if Lucy had married him
she would have come around
to Nam King in time.
We hear that the Methodist
mission is going to give [?$15,000?]
to open medical work
there so the Presbyterians will
not need to take that up.
I do not think Miss Niles
will ever go there. I dont
think there is much doubt
that she would like to
remain just where she is
but if some ladies are
sent out for school work
next autumn I do not
see how she can. If you
can come back then
you must try and bring
some one with you. If you
cannot come then perhaps
you will be able to come out in
time to take charge of the
school and let me go home.
If I had only come out for
five years as Miss Rowe has
I should be ready to go home
now. But I could not feel
that it would be right to go so
soon for I am perfectly
well. We have invited all the
girls and women in tonight
so with a party of about eighty
we shall have our hands
full. I am having a vacation
in the school this week that is
they are not studying they are
all here. Only two have gone home
this year. It is much better
not to have a vacation in the
winter for the school I think
but it makes it a little more
expensive. Yesterday AYan's
day school was closed. She
makes a splendid teacher
the best day school teacher
I have ever had.

must
close with
much love
for all

Hattie.

Kerr
Kerr
Jackson
