Letter from Hattie to Mother, June 17, 1883

Harriet writes to her mother about the rainy weather and how nice it was to all be home in 1877. Ayan, one of the schoolgirls, brought her baby over to her house last night. The girl thought that her baby was dying so she brought it to Miss Butler who was able to make everything well. However, Miss Butler is now sick with a cold that seems like pneumonia. A couple of the women at the school are also sick. The school will close soon which will allow them time to find a new teacher for next term.

June 17th 1883
My dear Mother -
It is getting
quite late in the
evening of June 17th
on this side of the
world so with you
it is morning now.
I do not know why
when I was thinking
of this day some
time since I had

it in mind that it
came on the 23d
I hope you will have
a pleasant comfortable
Sabbath. I wonder
if it will be as lovely
a day as the 17th
of June 1877 when
Lillie, Mary and
Verdie, were at our
house. It has not
been such a day
here, has rained
nearly all day Last
night there was a
very hard storm.

The day has for me
had quite a succession
of unpleasant experiences.
We have a little sick
Chinese baby in the
house which cried nearly
all night last night.
Mattie will know its
Mother one of our school-girls
AYan who lived with
mrs Henry for so long.
She brought the baby to
Miss Butler thinking it
was dying and we all
thought so too but she
brought it back to life.
and it seems to be doing
well now. But Miss Butler
is nearly sick herself with
such a bad cold that it

seems almost like pneumonia.
Then there are three women in
the school sick and so my
spare minutes have been filled
up with administering medicine
making mustard poultices
et cetera et cetera. It did not add to my
pleasure to find out that two
of the women in school are
sick in consequence of a
quarrel they had yesterday.
The womens school has been
without a regular teacher
for a little while and so
it does not go on very smoothly.
We are very glad the school
will close day after tomorrow
and I think we have a good
teacher for next term We
are sadly disappointed in two
of the women in who we had
the most perfect confidence
which I fear they were not worthy of.
I have filled my letter full by
my experiences so that I have
only room here to send you all
good wishes with much love Hattie -

她把孩子带到Henry太太因为她害怕它快死了，
我们都害怕婴儿会死，
但Henry 太太让它恢复生机，
现在几乎完全康复了。

Butler 小姐病得很重，
好像是肺炎。
/

学校里有三个生病的女人，
所以我一直在忙着给他们吃药。

我很生气地发现，
两个女人生病了
是因为他们昨天吵架了。
/
/
女子学校已经有一段时间没有正式的老师了，
所以她们的课并不顺利。
/

我很高兴学校将在两天内结束本学期。
/
/
下学期我们有一个很好的老师人选。
我也对吵架的两个女人很失望。
/
