Title

Letter from Hattie to Mother, June 25, 1883

Subject

Mail steamers; Fire; Anniversaries; Schools; Vacations; Sickness

Description

Harriet tells her mother that they were expecting the steamer tonight but they found out one of the night steamers caught fire due to "spontaneous combustion from the coal". The school closed on June 17th and will reopen on September 5th. Harriet says that the examination went well. Six scholars are staying at the school during vacation. There were 118 scholars in total this past year. Dr. and Mrs. Kerr are celebrating their 25th anniversary on July 4th. Harriet is happy because Miss Niles will remain in Canton instead of going to Nanjing, where, according to Harriet, it would not have been very pleasant. Mrs. Happer visited Wooster. Helen Henry had a fever but she is getting better now.

Canton China
June 25th 1883
My dear Mother -
We thought there
would be an opportunity
of sending our letters for
the mail down this eve
but have learned that
there will be no night
steamer. One of the night
steamers a few nights since
caught fire between here +
Hong Kong and it has not
been repaired It was
spontaneous combustion from
the coal. We are looking
for our mail from home
tomorrow. The last steamer
over encountered a typhoon
just out from Japan
and the mail on board
got quite wet. The letters

were all right I suppose
but the covers came off from
some of the newspapers.
The cover of the Seville Times
came but there was no
paper with it. We closed
the Boarding School last
week Tuesday. June 17th
and will open it again
Sept 5th It is very nice
indeed to have it closed
during the hot weather. It
will probably be very warm
when it reopens in September
but it will be getting near
the end of the hot season.
We had an examination
and it passed off very
well indeed. There are
only about half a dozen
scholars remaining during
vacation this year I
am so glad that they
got off so well. There

were so many at first that
wanted to stay that I was
afraid we could not help
keeping a good many and
beside the care of having
them here we did not want
the expense during vacation.
There have been altogether
during the past year 118
scholars but some of the
women have only been
in school a short time.
A week from Wednesday
the 4th of July will be
Dr Kerr's 25th anniversary
of their marriage. It happens
that it is just the regular
time for the prayer meeting
to be at their house and
we have found out that
they are going to invite
all the mission there to
tea. Dr Kerr does not
want any one to find
out that it is their silver

wedding We want to get
them something but have
not yet decided what. Perhaps
we will get a dinner service
and try to manage to have
the dishes on the table when
they come out to tea and
surprise them. Did I
write to you that at last
it is decided that Miss
Niles is to remain in Canton.
Dr happer received a telegram
from Dr Ellinwood "Niles
remain." She is very glad.
I would have been very
sorry if she had been
obliged to go to NanKing
as I do not think it would
have been very pleasant
for her there. Mrs Happer
spent three days in Wooster
so she had quite a visit
there. Little Helen Henry
has been quite sick with
fever but seems to be getting
better now --
[Note: Letter concludes sideways]
You must give my love to all I cannot write
any more this morning Your aff daughter Hattie

Kerr
