Harriet tells Em about Hattie Kerr left her canary bird with Harriet to take care of but it managed to get out of its cage and fly away. Akwai was sent to go purchase another one and ended up getting one for Miss Butler as well. Then Miss Butler bought her one so now they have three new birds in the house. She says she has over one hundred letters to answer and goes on to explain her dream last night which included Emily, Clara, and Ned. She is glad Emily had a nice visit with Lucy and it sounds like she and her two girls might be coming back to China. Mr. Abbey has come to Nanking and has married Mrs. Whitiny. Harriet says he proposed to Miss Niles as well and when he went home and did not get someone he wrote to the board and told them he had "expected to be married but that egg didn't hatch." Mr. Fulton is spending his honeymoon in Hong Kong. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst had to leave Chiang Mai and may stay over in Canton.

My dear Emily -
Last mail I had
two letters from you one
written June 7th and
one june 20th so I will answer
them both together and "kill
two birds with one stone". That
makes me think that I have
not written to Clara as I intended
to about our canary birds.
Hattie Kerr left has for me to
take care of and unfortunately
a few days after she was gone
it got out of the cage and
flew away. So I sent AKwai
to get another one and at the
same time to get one for
Miss Butler as the one that
I gave her the first Christmas
after she came got out of the
cage and was lost a long time
since. He got two very pretty
birds and then Miss Butler
bought one and gave me
so that we have all three here
now and they have quite a
time singing. At night we
have to put mosquito nets over
the cages and hang them
up in a row in Miss Butler's
bath room. Mine is named
Rex and hers Roy. I have
been busy serving this vacation
and have not commenced
writing my letters until to-day
I have over one hundred to
answer so I have a good
job before me. Did I
ever tell you what the final
end of the thin white dress
you gave me was. I found it
most useful and comfortable
made it all over once and
wore it a great deal. Then a
year ago last Christmas we
had a Christmas tree for the
Chinese scholars and I cut it
all up for little boys to put
candy in and tied them
with strips of red paper and
they looked very pretty and
gave a great deal of pleasure
to lots of little folks. I dreamed
last night of seeing you so
plainly and how do you think
I saw you. You and
Mary were coming home from
school in the old chariot when
as some of were watching
you from the sitting room door
Ned went over to the east side
of the road and upset the buggy
and threw you out. I thought
you walked away wringing your
hands and I was afraid
you were much hurt. The
little stream there I thought was
a great river and Ned plunged
in and went swimming around
with a board in his mouth like
a big dog. And then I awoke
and behold it was a dream.
I am afraid it is not very
safe for you to keep Scott
I hope you will sell him
if he does not seem perfectly
safe. I wonder what
Jenny is able to do for a
living now. I am glad you
had a visit from Lucy.
It must seem very odd
to see her with her two little
girls. I am so very glad that
she is coming back to China.
I presume she never knew
that there was any talk of
not sending them back.
Mr Abbey who has come to
NanKing since they went home
and has now married Mrs
Whitiny must be a queer stick.
He came over with Miss Niles
and wanted to marry her.
He expected to get some one
at home but failed wrote to the
Board that he "expected to be
married but that egg didnt
hatch" I should judge the
[u]sisters[/u] in that Mission will be
much the best part .
Mr Fulton is safely married
at last has got a very nice
wife I should think They
are in HongKong now spending
their honey-moon. I wrote to
you I think that Mr + Mrs
Hurst were obliged to leave Chieng Mai
We hope they can stay in Canton.
