Letter from Harriet to Father, March 1, 1884
Subject
Church buildings--vandalism; Indemnity; Schools
Description
Hattie tells her father that Henry left for the country in a hurry because the chapel in Mr. Henry and Mr. White's station up the East River was vandalized. The authorities promised to pay an indemnity, so Henry went there to receive the money. A Bible woman came from the country and told Harriet that she has a school with 27 scholars. Harriet says that work is going well.

My dear Father
I presume you will
not get any letter from Henry
by this mail as he went off to
the country quite hurriedly a
day or two ago. I do not remember
whether I wrote about the
trouble Mr Henry + Mr White
had in the country at one of
the stations up the East River
some time since. There was
some damage done to the
chapel but the authorities
promised to pay an indemnity
therefor and that is why
Henry has gone out now to
receive the money. The
authorities acted very promptly
in the matter so we hope it
will prevent such disturbances
in future. We have letters
from Mr Henry written
just before they reached
Singapore. Mrs Henry + Helen
were seasick but the others not
This is the day before our
communion and I have
been so busy all day that
I have not found any
time for writing as I hoped
I should. We have just
returned from the
afternoon meeting and it
is time to send our letters
to the night steamer our
last chance for this mail.
There have been several
examined I do not know
how many will be received
One of the Bible women
who has come in from
the country says she has
a school of twenty seven
scholars Notwithstanding
the troubles the work seems
prosperous I must say
good bye with much love
for all from
Harriet
