Hattie writes to her father, describing the photographs that she is including in the letter. One of them is of Dr. Kerr's medical class (Dr. Thomson is there too). She talks about Dr. Thomson's ability to do surgery with a crippled right hand. She mentions some of the other men who are essential to the hospital. Mak Shui is an elder, a preacher, and the first assistant in the hospital, and Dr. So To Ming is specialized in cataract surgery. Harriet describes various photographs she sent with the letter.

My dear Father,
I send you by
this mail some photographs
which I think you will be
interested in seeing one is of Dr
Kerr's medical class taken
just before he left. You will
see that Dr Kerr and Dr Thomson
are in the center of the group.
Dr Kerr's is so very good just as
he looked before he went away. I
hope he will not be quite so thin
when he comes back. Dr Thomson's
is very natural also. If you
notice carefully you will see
how his right hand is crippled.
Notwithstanding he seems to be
a very skillful surgeon. I wonder
how he can use the knife as he
does. I saw him operate on a
little girl from the Boarding
School who had a tumor on
her back. Dr Kerr was present
but Dr Thomson performed
the operation and it seemed
to me that it was done beautifully.
He is a thoroughly good little
man, we have found during
these past days of more or less
excitement that he is not at all
timid. I think it would take
a great deal to scare him. The
Chinaman sitting next to Dr Kerr
is Mak Shui one of our elders
the first assistant in the hospital
and also a preacher of the
De Witt Talmage style. It
is certainly "enough to make
an owl laugh" to hear him
preach. He is so irresistibly
[Illegible] but a good fellow
without. The one next Dr Thomson
is Dr So To Ming. He came
over with us on the Great
Republic seventeen years
ago and taught me Chinese
on the way over. He is quite
skillful and performs most
of the operations for cataract.
He is a member of Dr
Happer's church has a very
nice wife and family. The
others I do not know much
about. The one at the end
with nothing in his hands
is Dr Kerr's teacher who
helps him in translating his
medical works. The group
was taken in our yard
the large tree is a banyan
the small one arbor vitae
and an oleander between
the house back is a Chinese
house beyond Dr Kerr's yard
which does not show in
the picture. The little picture
of the scholars was miserably
taken they are so black like
little negroes where as many
of them are not much darker
than I have grown to be
Hattie Kerr Julia & Helen
Henry are in the picture
Helen would not keep still
and you see the result.
The other photograph is
of our pastor and his family
Rev Kwan Loi. His wife is
a pleasant rather nice looking
lady but she has no
education and could not
be persuaded to study.
The little girl is a great favorite
and petted by everyone.
We are growing to like
Kwan Loi very much. He
seems diligent and earnest
faithful in the performance
of his duties, and the
church seems to be prospering
under his care. You will
doubtless remember the
letters in the Observer a few
years since about him.
He is not easily frightened
and has endured a good
deal of persecution. He
had a price set on his head
at that time. That house
from which he escaped by the
roof has never been occupied
since. The people walled up
the door and it has never
yet been opened although
I think the Mission still
holds the lease. I send the
same photographs to Mr Henry
please forward With much love

Kerr
