Title

Letter from Hattie to Mattie, April 16, 1885

Subject

Travel; Steamboats; Marriage; Women missionaries; Summer; Health; Single women

Description

Harriet thinks that going to Macau over the summer will be the most popular choice. She tells Martha that Miss Norwood will eventually marry Dr. Lyall, which is supposed to be kept a secret. Harriet believes that it is an unlikely couple because she is ten or twelve years older than him. Dr. Lyall is currently back in England for health reasons. The Ashmores are on the verge of thinking that sending out single missionary women is useless. Harriet wonders whether Mattie will attend the Assembly meeting in Cincinnati.

My dear Mattie
I hav'nt time
to answer your letter
tonight for I am
tired and sleepy.
and it is after eleven
we must get up early
in the morning for
"our boarder" Dr Thomson
is going down to Macao
to spend the Sabbath
in the bosom of his family
and the steamer
leaves early. It is going
to be the fashion evidently
to go to Macao this
summer. Mrs Thomson
Miss Baird and
Miss Lewis are down
there now. Mrs Fulton
and Dr Fulton are

going down this week
Henry thinks of going
to [?Haiman?] in May
and if so his family
will go down to Macao
to stay while he is
away. Miss Thompson
of Swatow has been
making a visit here
she goes home on
the Tokin. Have I told
you the Swatow secret,
you must keep it
secret even in America
unless you hear it
from some other
source. Miss Norwood
is to marry sooner or
later Dr Lyall. Do
you not think it a
strange match. She

is ten or twelve years
older than he.
He has just gone home
to England for his
health or they will
not be married at
present. The Ashmores
are distressed about it
and almost ready
to conclude that Sending
out single ladies is
of no use. But Miss
Norwood has put in
eight good years of
mission work already.
Miss Whilden hopes
to come back next
Autumn. Would you
not like to arrange
to come with her.
And what would

you think of coming
with Dr and Mrs
Kerr. They expect to
come in Aug or
Sept. The Henrys are
going the other way
via England.
There are lots of things
I would like to write
but I cannot tonight.
will try and do
better next time
I wonder if you will
be at the meeting of the
Assembly in Cincinnati
Dr Thomsons friends
his Mother + brothers live
near Cincinnati and
he would be very glad
to have you visit there
if it should be convenient
any time With love Hattie.
