Harriet writes to Emily about the travels of different missionaries, including Henry. They have a visitor at their home currently, a doctor who keeps a very erratic schedule. She also writes about how sad she feels for those "walking in darkness" and others who are not as devout Christians. She is thinking of the house on the hill and expresses empathy for the death of Budge, Em's dog. Dogs are much cheaper in China and Harriet wishes she could send Em one.

My dear Em,
Your letter of May 2nd
with Clara's came Saturday.
I also had such a nice
letter from Mrs Perkins.
Next to the home letters
I always enjoy hers.
There are only a few minutes
left before dinner but I will
see how much I can write
before the bell rings. Our
[u] boarder [/u] Dr Thomson has
gone down to Macau to see
his wife will be back again
this afternoon. It makes
our meals a little irregular
to have a Doctor boarder
as he can not always come

at the proper time. He
occasionally brings a brother
doctor with him. Dr Leech
of the SS [?Palos?] a US Gunboat
here now has been in several
times. He is quite a
handsome young fellow
used to be a schoolmate of
Mr White's but looks much
younger. Mr Fulton has
gone for a trip into the
country and Henry is still
away at Hainan. I was
so very sorry to hear from
your letters that Cousin Maria
is walking in darkness. It
is a sad experience but not
uncommon. Miss Lewis had
such an experience which
continued for years. I
suppose very few escape it

entirely. How much I wish
that Dr Bigham would
become a Christian and
enter into Christian work
with the energy with which
he does everything else.
It does seem such a pity
that Calvin Elliot does not
appear to have more
interest in his church.
It would be such a
comfort to you all if you
could have a real earnest
faithful minister. I am
so sorry to hear of Mrs
Lelands affliction. I wonder
if I shall ever see her again.
Give her my love and also
Mrs Dorsey, it seems too bad
that she should have such
a hard time. I am

so sorry to know that you
have so much trouble with
you throat hope that the
warm weather will cure
it. I wonder when I shall
see the leaves came out again
on the trees around the dear
old home on the hill. I
am so glad the railroad
is not coming through to
spoil the place. I wish
that old flax mill would
take wings and fly away
sometime. Miss Butler has
a pair of canines and is raising
some little ones. There were two
but the unnatural father ate
one of them up, and then
we took it out of the cage
I am sorry that Budge
did. Canines cost very little
