Description

In this letter to Clara, Harriet speaks mostly about the recent members of Clara's community that have joined their church. Harriet knows this must make her father very happy. It gives her encouragement in her missionary work. She thinks of everyone as connected in the Christian Church, all impacting each other and inviting new people to join the faith.

Canton China
June 8th 1885

My dear Clara -
I have written so hastily
the past few times that I
do not think I have written
anything about the revival
in Seville last winter
I was so very glad to hear
of the blessing you had received
and I can imagine how
much you all enjoyed
the meetings and welcoming
one after another into the
fold. What a wonderful
change it is for any one
who has all his life walked
in the opposite direction to
commence following Jesus.
I never shall forget what
intense delight it gave me
when I went home to see
John High such an earnest
Christian seeming to feel

so much at home in the
home of the Lord. It made
one of the deepest and most
delightful impressions connected
with my home coming which
I always remember as
more like reaching heaven
than anything else on earth
could possible be. And no
doubt one of the joys of heaven
will be the finding there of
some who we hardly expected
would find their way [illegible]
I often think with encouragement
in connection with our
work here of the seven
thousand in the time of
Elijah who had not bowed
the knee to Baal and of
whose existence and
faithfullness he knew nothing.
I am glad that Father
had the joy of seeing such
a good work and I have
not the slightest doubt as

far as human instrumentality
is concerned he had more to
do in procuring the blessing
than any one else. I believe
most fully that at the last
when God rewards every
one according to his labors -
many will find their rewards
very different from what
they have expected. for no
man can tell where the
influences originate which
lead to certain results. I
was very much impressed
many years ago by an
illustration used by a minister
who preached here. several
times Rev Sholto Douglass
He belonged to the nobility in
England and was a thoroughly
consecrate man like Mr
Mooely. He said that every
soul which was born again
was as it were linked to
Christ by a chain of many

links and usually the one
who formed the last one was
supposed to be the instrument
of the soul's conversion while
the truth was that farther
back some one else had
doubtless formed many links.
of which only God knew.
And so it doubtless is and
however fruitless any of our
efforts to do good may seem
to be we may surely know
that they are not. I am
glad to have the list of names of
those who have united with the
church. So many of them are
strange to me but perhaps I shall
soon know them . I am so glad
that Will Chambers has take a
decided stand for the right.
You must accept this as an
answer to all the good letters
I have had from you lately
the last one written May 2nd
With much love Ever your aff
Hattie -
