Harriet writes to her father about the mail steamer coming and their new boarder Dr. McCandliss, noting that he is very young but they like him. She then elaborates that Dr. McCandliss is the only man with their mission right now while others (Henry, Dr. Thompson, Mr. Fulton, and Mr. White) are away. Harriet notes that Dr. McCandliss was almost not allowed to be a missionary, and discusses the power of names (leading to the discussion of an article attributing the name "Noyes" to a Frenchman named Philip De La Noye). Also included in the letter is a note to Clara about faith and trusting in God when things seem dark.

My dear Father,
This is our last
day for writing the mail but
I have already sent some
letters to the office. We have
some hope that the home
mail may come in today
It is due in Hong Kong but
sometimes it comes in a
little earlier than expected
and if it came in early
in the morning they might
perhaps get it off on the
Canton steamer. We have
had our new boarder Dr
McCandliss for a week now.
We like him very much.
He looks very young but seems
equal to whatever situation he
finds himself in. Dr Thomson
is down in Macau so that he
is at the head of the hospital,
and he is at the head of
our mature family, has
prayers with us every evening
and just now he is the
only gentleman in the
mission now in Canton.
Mr Fulton is in Hong Kong
[u] resting [/u] Henry and Mr
White are away on a relief
expedition. He the little
doctor conducted our prayer
meeting last Wednesday.
There were six ladies present
and we all kept silence.
He did not seem to mind
it at all but I think he
did a little. He is accustomed
to leading prayer meetings
however as he has had charge
of a young people's prayer
meeting in Philadelphia
for more than a year.
His father is a Doctor in
Philadelphia. For a long time
he was very unwilling that
his son should came out as
a missionary. He said he
told him he should not have
named him Henry Martyr
if he were not willing to allow
him to be a missionary
He did however finally
give his consent. We have
two Henrys in our mission
who were named for
Henry Martyr and one
who was named for
Harriet Newall so perhaps
there is something in a name
I saw the article in the
Atlantic Monthly which refers
to our name, the original of
Noyes and this is what it
says. It is in an article on
Huguenot Emigration to
America written by Dr Baird.
He says there were few of the
French Huguenots who came
with the Pilgrims to New England
but among them was Philip
De la Noye, who came over
in the Fortune in 1621 and
from whom or from whose
kindred of like name are
descended all the numerous
persons named Delano and
[u] Noyes [/u]. I am very glad to
know the origin of our name.
I have been told before that it

All night in the darkness toiling,
And seemingly all in vain,
In a land that sits in the shadows,
Of sin, and death, and pain.
And our hearts sometimes grow weary,
Our thoughts are with sadness fraught,
For doubt, and discouragement whisper
Ye but spend your strength for naught.
Does the seed [u] all [/u] fall by the wayside,
Amid thorns, or on stony ground,
Will there be no yield of golden grain,
Will nothing but [?tares?] be found?
Oh! surely, the Lord of the harvest,
Will care for the seed we sow,
For His love for the erring, and sinful
Is deeper than we can know.
And the eye that never slumbereth
Watching ever the sparrow's flight,
Sees beyond the midnight darkness,
The glow of the morning light.
So our faith, and hope grow stronger,
With thoughts of His boundless love.
And the darkness around us brightens
On the light, that shines from above.
For the Master will come in the morning
When the long dark hours are past,
And the work that has seemed so fruitless.
He will crown with success at last
He knows all our trials and weakness,
But with Him is infinite power,
And His promise, "Fear not I am with thee,"
Is ours in the darkest hour.
and when sowers and reapers together
Rejoice o'er the ripened grain.
We shall see when the harvest is gathered
That [u] no [/u] work for the Master was vain.
