Description

In a letter to Emily, Harriet notes that she is looking forward to seeing Martha soon. It has almost been eight years since she was last home, but she feels she hasn't done as much the past couple of years as she would have liked to. Over the past few months, she and the other women in her house have been caring for their doctors. She and Miss Butler were so relieved when their boarders left. She mentions the Kerrs and Dr. and Mrs. Swan who have stayed with them. Harriet talks about how Mr. Fulton and Dr. Kerr are planning to get a location in the country. They are planning to build a verandah on the back of the school building.

Canton China
Oct 10th 1885.
My dear Em -
I suppose before this
Martha has again left home
and just about the time
this reaches you I will
probably be welcoming her
back to China . I hope she
will keep well and strong so
that she will be able to do
the Mission work she desires
to take up. In five days
more it will be eight years
since I left home. I do
not think it seems as long
as the first eight years.
The work has been interrupted
so much the past two years
that it seems as though
we have not been accomplishing
much. The past six
months we have spent a
good deal of time taking
care of our doctors. During
the summer it was too

hot to keep dressed up for
company all day so we
had to dress to go down to
meals three times a day
and as soon as they were
gone we would come
up stairs and put on our
wrappers. The morning
after they all went away
Miss Butler said she thought
she never felt so much relieved
in her life before. I hope
we will not feel obliged
to take boarders again
soon. We did not take any
board from Dr Kerr and
Dr Swan. They were only
here two weeks. I presume
I have told you that we
like Dr + Mrs Swan very
much Dr Swan especially.
Mrs Swan has fever
today - it is rather soon to
commence having fever.
I hope she will be able

to shake it off. Dr Kerr
has gone for a trip in the
country, with the Fultons.
They are trying their own
plan for getting a location
in the country. No on excepting
themselves has much faith
in their success. I remember
Mr Henry said once the
question in Mr Fulton's case
was to put time where he
would do the least harm.
We hoped Miss Fulton would
exert a steadying influence
over her brother but she
is just like him only perhaps
a "little more so." Dr Swan
has lent me Mr Henry's
book. I am as much
distressed by what he did
say about me as what he
did not say about Henry.
I would so much rather
he would have said what
he had to say about Henry.

I do not see why he did not
mention his name with Mr
Fabers who came here only
a little before Henry ---
Henry is like Dr Kerr it
does not seems as though
he has quite his share of
the "praise of men" in this
life but it will be all
right at last. Miss Butler
is writing letters to missionary
societies . I have not
written one this summer and
now the vacation is almost
over. We have seemed
to have our time so
filled up. We have been
having a verandah built
at the back of the school building
about two thirds of the length
of the building , It will
help to break the force of this
North wind which is
sometimes very cold here
I am so very sleepy that I
must say goodnight. With love
Hattie
