She explains how much Sophie loves when Henry (her brother) preaches and gives updates on the other preachers in the mission. She then discusses some of the Noyes's family history she has been communicating with distant family members about. She then tells Emily how glad Harriet is that Edward is teaching her Sabbath School class, and talks about how Emily and a Miss Woolcott could run Emily's school by themselves.

My dear Em -
This is a delightfully
cool morning we have had so
much rain for a day or two past
that the air is thoroughly cooled
for the time being . Yesterday it
stopped raining long enough for
us to get to church . It is only a few
steps from the back door of the
school building to the chapel not as
far as from the corner of the home
to the horsebarn but when it rains
it is quite troublesome to get nearly
a hundred many of them with
bound feet even that distance.
The night steamer came in just
before I came out to the school building
this morning and I was delighted
to see the flags were up .so we shall
soon have the mail. It will probably
come in while we are at breakfast.
Mr Henry preached last evening
from the text - "And it was evening
and morning the fifth day." He
dwelt at some length on the fact
that the evening [u]precedes[/u] the
morning the night of sorrow and
ignorance earthly life, precedes the
[u]day[/u] of everlasting bliss. He
always preaches well. When
Henry is away I think he is
the best preacher here. Sophie
said yesterday that when she
came she heard so many times
that Mr Noyes preached the
best sermons of any one here. I
am glad to know that the present
generation of missionaries are such
good judges . She says her Mother
always talked so much about
Henry used to say that she thought
Mr Noyes was just as good as any
one could be. Sophie seemed to think
that no one need to wish for anything
more than such a refutation as that.
Last night there were about forty at
the evening service and not one of
the number except Sophie (then a
little girl) was here when I came
Dr Kerr was away in HongKong
Dr Happer does not attend these
meetings and Dr Graves has not
yet returned. I do not know whether
he will come up on the steamer this
morning or not . If he is not more
strict about the Sabbath than some of
our missionaries I presume he will
Mr Wisner does not hesitate to come
up on the steaming leaving H Kong
Sabbath afternoon. and Mr
Henry seems to have no scruples
about travelling on the Sabbath.
The same difficulty about drawing
the line exists on this side of the
world. that is found in U.S.A --
I was much interested in the
letter from James Atkin Noyes -
and will try and send a note
to him by this mail . I hope
he will pursue his investigations and
put the result in some accessible
form. Father would have
been interested .I will also write
a line to Miss Mary Noyes of Princeton
who was the one who gave us the
coat of arms. or rather the motto
There used to be a lady out here
the wife of Dwight Williams who
was a Noyes. She had a chair
carved with the coat of arms but I
do not remember what it was it
seems to me there was an eagle
on it. Dwight Williams was the
brother of S. Wells. Williams .But i
do not think that either he or his
wife is living now. When this reaches
you it will be summer again almost
four months have gone since I left
you. I always seem to have more
time to think of you on the Sabbath
than other days . The Sabbaths at
home were such nice quiet days
and then we had such good
sermons and the Sabbath School
was so pleasant . It seems as though
I ought to see my class sometimes.
I shall always feel so [u]very glad[/u] that
Edward could take them if it does
not make his Sabbath too busy .I think
it is an easy class to teach they are
not critical and they are those
who have walked in the right way
so long that there is not a very heavy
sense of anxiety or responsibility on
their account. There is not much
danger of their worrying him by
playing cards or attending dancing
parties .I am very sorry Prof
Eberly does not take different
views on some subjects. It seems
as though he is throwing away a
grand opportunity . I wonder
if Miss Woolcott will ever return.
I wish that you and she
could run the school according
to your ideas. If it were not
for the [u]discipline[/u] and the
idea that women could not
manage it.I suppose you
could do it well enough. I wish
they could have just the
right kind of a man for
that place --With love
