Title

Letter from Hattie to Clara, August 11, 1889

Subject

Married people in missionary work; Weddings; Food poisoning

Description

Harriet writes to Clara inquiring about school and Mary's teaching, wondering if Mr. Notestein will leave at the end of the year. The excitement of Sophie's wedding has finally calmed down. Harriet hopes there won't be another courting episode for a while, though she is glad to see that they married because they truly care about each other. She mentions Martha and Dr. Kerr's travel plans and says that Martha has not been well since she ate poisoned shrimp.

Canton China
Aug 11th 1889
My dear Clara
This is Sabbath
morning. I have risen
early and will write a
little to you before the day
begins. It is delightfully
cool this morning indeed
I think we have had a
very pleasant summer.
At first I felt the heat so
very much but I have become
accustomed to it now. It is
Saturday evening with you
now I wonder if you are
getting your S School lesson
I am glad Mary has a
class if she feels strong
enough to teach there I
know it will be very nice
for them And Faye will
be glad to be in your class
again. I wonder if
Mr Notestein will leave

you at the end of the year
If he does I wish Mr Allen
would come back. Whoever
you get I hope it will be some
one that you will like and
who will like to stay in Seville
After all the excitement
of the past few months here
we are having a quiet time
now and we enjoy it very
much. We are all very
fond of Sophie but it
seems nice to be more
quiet. I suppose it will
not be last very long in
the fall there is so much
coming and going. I
hope it will be a long time
before there will be another
courting episode here.
The school was quite distracted
over it. They all thought
so much of Sophie and
took such a deep interest
in her affairs. She and

Mr Wisner seem perfectly
happy and I doubt
not they will always be
very happy in each other.
It seems nice to see
two persons married who
care for each others happiness.
This will not reach you
until the middle of Sept
and by that time I
suppose Henry will have
left you to come back
to China. That will make
the ninth leaving for China
if we count Dr & Hattie
McCandliss as one.
I think our home really
deserves to be called "Mission
Hill." The next to come
and go will doubtless be
Dr Kerr and Martha.
They are in Hong Kong
today went down on Friday
M did not expect to stay
only over night but Dr Kerr

said he should try to
persuade her to stay over
the Sabbath. She has not
been well since she was
poisoned eating those shrimps
It seems such a pity
Mrs Gilman of Hainan
is very ill and they are all
coming up to Dr Swan's
this week that is all the
Gilman family, that
will leave Dr McCandliss
alone there as Mr Jeremiassen
is in the country. I suppose
he will be glad of that as they
do not [?assimilate?] Hainan
seems to be a hard place to live
and they have as yet no
comfortable homes. Dr McC's
father is in very poor health
they do not think he can live
long. Since his son went home
he is quite reconciled and glad
to have him a missionary
He is so anxious to see Dr Kerr
that is one reason that I very

[Continued vertically on the first page]
much wish
them to go soon.
[?Mamies?] engagement
with that deaf
man is given
up. All that
passed I think
did make
Dr McC
feel differently
to his step
mother & [?Mamie?]
It seems too
bad they were so devoted
to him,
I am afraid
this is not
a Sabbath letter
it is not what
I thought to write.
With love ever Hattie.

Jeremiassen
