Canton China
Dec 16th 1889
My dear Em
This is Monday morning
we are hoping that the home
mail which left you about
the middle of November will
come this morning . I came
out to school before the
night steamer came in
so do not know whether it
was on board or not .I am
very glad that I have
finished my paper for the
Shanghai Conference and
feel quite relieved . I did
not find it very difficult to
write and it did not take
me long when I set about it.
I must copy it this week
and send it off as they
want to have them before
the end of December .The
papers are all to be published

in full then the writers are
to be allowed each to speak
ten minutes and tell the
substance of their papers .+
thus I suppose [save] the time
of the Conference . This was
the first plan I have heard
since that they have changed
it and are to have the
papers read in full . It seems
as though that would probably
be more satisfactory .I dreamed
last night that Edward said
the papers that had been
sent it were not satisfactory
to the committee and I thought
my unfortunate one was one
of them . Dreams "go by [?contraries?]"
however. I am very glad it is
done and hope it will pass
muster. This is Tuesday
morning, the mail came
yesterday. - It usually is
brought in while we are at
breakfast, and you may
imagine creates quite a [?convention?]
in our quiet household.

Yesterday we all sprang up and
each one seized as many
letters as she could but when
we apportioned them out correctly
each of us had just two, [those]
were from home and from Mary
Easton . If you did not write
to me so faithfully I should not
get anything scarcely when
the mail comes . My
correspondents have nearly all
dropped off and I do not mourn
very much for I have not much
time left for writing letters .
I received a few weeks ago
a letter from Miss Meta Paul
she said she wished you
and I were coming to visit
them again this fall .
I am glad we had such a
nice visit there. Fanny has
been having trouble with her
eyes. She says Rodney has
a great many irons in the fire
and is every day becoming

more + more a confirmed bachelor
says it would be a sad day
for them when he married
but that he would make
some one such a good husband.
There is no doubt about that
but that girl can marry some
other nice man and he
can live with his sisters and
so make three ladies happy
instead of one. Tell Edward
this all for his benefit.
I dont believe Rodney could
have a nicer home than
he has now .I wish we could
have a few confirmed bachelors
come out her for a while until
they could get some residences
in the interior .I think even
the married people are convinced
that it is the only way that
it can ever be accomplished.
But I fear it is hoping for the
impossible for all those who do
come out single seems crazy
to get married as soon as they land.

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
and every one
talks to them
constantly
about it
I think
like Mrs
Leyenbager
that they
do act
very silly
on this
question
over here.
as well as
sometimes in
other parts
of the world
but we are
wise ? ? ?
with love Hattie
