Canton China
Nov 8 1917.
My dear Mary -
I have just come back from
Martha she returned from Hainam reaching
here yesterday, and had quite a high fever
but to-day her temperature is down so hope she
will be all right in a day or two. I intended
to go over this morning, but there were many things to
do, and then I had to go to the Bank, and came
back just in time for lunch then in the afternoon
I have a class so it was nearly four before I could get
off. I found Mary there, and soon Mrs Moyer
who is a trained nurse came in to give her her
medicine a little ^later Dr Selden came in. I met Mrs
Selden just as I was going in. and she said she
wanted to go to see her yesterday, but Dr Selden thought
perhaps she had better wait. Those when Dr Ross
and Dr Harvey were announced I thought it was
time for me to take my departure. Her two Chinese
women were also within call so you will she does
not lack care and attention. Your good long
letter of Oct 11th she had just received, and let
me read it and we feel so sad about Mr Carson,
but we will try and hope that he is much better before
this and Dr Alexander is right, and that he will
be able to preach again. Dr Kerr seemed to have
a stroke once so that his speech was affected for a little
time, but he seemed afterwards just the same.
I did not see him, and do not know as he
called it paralysis, he took a little shaved ice
just after eating, and I think they thought it
chilled his stomach and was perhaps the cause.

2.
We shall wait most anxiously for further word.
We have often said and thought that as he is younger
than some of us we hoped he could fill the pulpit in
the home church while we live. but it seemed too
good to be true. and he does not seem strong. I wonder
if his dreadful headaches have any connection with it
It is I suppose a nervous trouble. They are so short
of funds that that doubtless makes it hard for him
to be willing to have a trained nurse. I suppose he
is in the room when we used to go to see Mrs Carson.
I wish Chalmers could get through with his
studies. Mary said today that you sent from
home the account of Billy's attempt to teach his young
son Bible Stories. Miss Burlingame had it in one
of her papers and gave it to me, and I thought I
would send it home to you, but it will not be necessary.
I am sure you enjoyed it as we did. I have a new
bottle of ink observe the results. Miss Burlingame
takes her lunch three days in the afternoon.
She said Mary said today she wished she had a
lot of money for she would so like to send a nice
Christmas box to the aunts, said she would rather
send to Seville than anywhere else. Is'nt it nice
that she feels so. Will was so certainly fortunate, as
we all are, in having her in the Noyes clan.
I feel almost sure the next one will be another laddie
and Mary says it seems so to her. there are
still six Noyes girls in the preceding generation
so four little boys would be all right.
We had the family all down here last
Saturday with Dr and Mrs Harvey. There is
only [?one?] verdict in Canton about the Noyes boys
that they are "A No 1." Richard is just as

dear and cute as he can be and as pretty as a
picture. You would enjoy seeing him march
halt wheel, forward march etc etc He is so interested
in the drilling over there and can march beautifully
and in perfect time. I must tell you about our
last party which was last night. When they had a
reception for the new True Lighters down at Paak Hok Tung
we hoped we were out of it but the Chinese began to talk
about having a welcome for them here so we felt
obliged to invite a large dinner party. We wished
to do something for Lun Sin Shuang so we put it all
together, and invited thirty six, with our two selves
making thirty eight. It was quite an undertaking
and required careful packing to get three tables
into one room. Miss Butler attending to the cooking
and I arranged the tables etc and all passed
off satisfactorily, hilariously and we are so glad
that it is over, and hope that we will never feel
obliged to have another. We are laboring now every
spare moment over a bazaar which the missionary
society is getting up to raise funds - and there
Christmas will come. Tell Emily I have
received her letter enclosing Fleming Revell Co's
answer. I am not surprised that they do not
care to take any risk in the matter. I wish to
answer by this mail if I can have time to write
tomorrow forenoon will hope to get it in.
I can only think of Mr Carson now. I am
so sorry for him and the family, his wife especially,
and for ourselves. Do if you can give them
my warmest sympathy. we will try to think
the next mail will bring better news.
I enclose ten dollars for a Christmas gift
for Emily and yourself. Much love goes with it
from Hattie -

即他们是“A No 1”。
