Title
Letter from Mattie to Edward, February 22, 1890
Subject
Christianity in China; Scholarly journals; Schools; Conversion
Description
Mattie has been getting some sewing ready for a woman she hired out of pity because she has been having a hard time finding a job because she is Christian. Yesterday, Mattie spent most of the day transcribing an article for the Medical Journal that had been revised and annotated by Dr. Fulton. Last night a woman came and asked Mattie to take in a little boy. They do not have enough room so they took it to Henry's and he is now enrolled in a Christian school. She is thrilled about the boy becoming a Christian and contrasts him to other pupils that for different reasons abandoned the school.

Feb 22nd 1890
My dear Edward
It is after 8 oclock and
I thought this morning I would
write some letters to day but
all its hours have gone and
pen has not touched paper.
Before breakfast spent the
time in getting some sewing
ready for a woman to whom
out of pity I have been giving
employment to the past week
She is a christian and this
has stood in the way of her
getting work. She has studied
in the school and we hope
she may eventually find
she can be of service to the
hospital patients. The teacher
of the hospital school has been
laid up the past week from
an accident and this woman
has been instructing the pupils.
We have Feb 22nd Reached
this point last night when a note
came over from Dr Fulton in
reference to an article Dr Niles
had sent down from the coun-
try for the Medical Journal. I
suppose it was hastily written
and she wished the two Drs to
revise it. Well it did not look
a very presentable document
after the revising was done and
Dr Fulton asked me to copy it
This took the remander of the
eve, and most of this forenoon.
Then last night just before
dark a woman came bringing
a box for me to take into the
hospital school He was a
bright pleasant looking little
chap but we have no way of
having boarders here. so the Dr
and myself immediately took a
boat and went over to Henry's
to see if he could be received
into his school. He said "oh yes"
so to day after the article in hand
was ready for the press the little
man and myself went up to [?Han
Li Fau?]. He had never been in
a boat before, everything he saw
on the river was new to him
and he was a wide awake boy
I tell you. To night he is a mem
ber of a Christian school. I could
not help praying that he might
become a clerestian and do
good work for the Master in the
years to come. His name is
[?A po?]. Now will you not at home
pray for him sometimes? We do
have disappointments as well as
encouragements. A pupil we have
been partially supporting for the
past two years has gone to his
home in Fat shan and word
reached us to day that he was
not coming back. He was such
a good scholar. We will hope
he has gained enough knowledge
to be saved. Another was
take out by his mother and set
to work. all unknown to us.
We did not find it out for some
time thereafter. A third was
detected in [--s--] stealing and a second
offence made it necessary for
him to leave the school. I do
hope this one will go on all right
The others have all heard the gos
pel and know how to worship the
one living and true God and
that is something. This afternoon
we had a service preparatory
to the commission to morrow.
An old woman who had heard
the doctrine in a day school

tism and seemed to give ev-
idence that she was a christian

from the hospital but there
is a woman here that had she
applied I think would have
been received. Yesterday in
one of the men's ward I met a

but is not well. I hope this trip will do him some
good. Now
I must say

I thought of
you when I
saw the ses-
sion together

be a busy day.
