April 23rd
Dear Mary,
Wish so much I could go in
and see you all a few minutes this
morning. If we really get home in
1891 it will not be so very long but we
must none of us set our hearts upon it
I am very anxious to get this hospital
school settled a little first but feel as if
a proper building will do much to settle
it. Have such a good teacher now
if she can only go on a few years it
will be such a blessing [--if--] Am sure
a good work can be done here in
this direction. Have been out to
see the old building coming down. There
is a sort of fascination always in watch
ing men at work on houses. It is well
there is a building between or I might
waste some time that way. I do not
like to think how rapid are the
changes going on in our home and
congregation. But if our friends are
transferred to heaven it will not
be hard for us to say good bye to
this world when our turn comes.
How glad Mother will be to see Mrs
Cary. It seems a little now about our
dear ones in heaven like our

home on Earth. As we leave it
and come here or from here re-
turn it is a help to think the other
household has the joy of their presence
To one of us these home partings
are over. Whoever is called first will
have the joy of entering in and it will
be unaloyed. It seems strange there
are so few at home, just the same we
have. But it is a family and makes
a home. Our eyes from this foreign
land constantly turn to that dear spot
as our earthly home. Here we are
pilgrims and strangers not owning a
foot of ground or a roof to cover us.
I want to say if you can in any
way make that woodland that is sup-
posed to belong to me minister to
your advantage or comfort, do so.
Sarah Mattie says is next to it [--so--]
and she is at home so at least 2/3 of
it can considered. I am very
sorry we could not buy the other share
but it seems we can not. Well it is
all right some way. Poor would we
could do something to help, but
it cannot be. Earths shadows and
affections are only in that case adding
to the lustre of the heavenly crown

Earthly honours could not compensate
for the glory which will one day be
his. God bless him. You write of
our new president. It does seem
nice to have a Christian man
and a Christian woman in the White
House. May they be able to preserve their
garments without spot. We do not
feel that the selection of Secretary of
State was a good one. Are afraid
of the influence of Blaine. But
perhaps it will be all right. Yes
again we say it must in some way
be all right. I do hope the Admin
istration will prove a blessing to the
nation. We are awaiting anxiously the
stand taken towards China. If some
thing is not done the Chinese will
do something on this side after
awhile. The new railroad out
of Yuen Sin has already had an
accident in which a number of
lives were lost. It occurred as
nearly as we can find out because
of a drunken Engineer-foreigner
It is truly hard for these Chinese
to see much Christianity in the

She has for many years been a professed

this and I could not tell her. The girl

Sarah Mattie
