Description

Martha writes to Emily about the security measures they take for the house at night and how the week before the house (Miss Patterson in particular) was robbed by the nephew of one of the watchmen. Martha updates on Harriet's health and how Harriet and Miss Butler will be traveling home in the spring to rest Harriet's nerves (Harriet would like to leave earlier, but the doctor wants her to wait). She also updates that Henry has been appointed Mission Treasurer.

My dear Em,
It is not quite day
light but the Dr and Mr
Coleman are off on the
rounds and our boy is
just opening up the house
We have to lock up very
securely at night barring
the doors and windows every
one of which has outside
venetians which must also
be barred, and we put in
the Typhoon bars also. So you
see were you to put in an
appearance at night you
would not enter without
help from inside. Last
Sabbath while we were at
church our house was
entered and Miss Patterson
lost about 7 1/2 dollars and her

clock. The little robber was
found during the afternoon
when he had spent but
two dollars. The next morning
some of his clothes were [?paure
ed?] by his uncle who is our
watchman, so Miss P has
only lost about .50 Her clock
also was restored. This boy Apat
came here a few weeks ago
to visit his Uncle and as our
cook was disabled at the time
with a sore hand he helped
us in the house some.
We did various things for him
and mean time he studied
the situation, and took his
opportunity while we were at
the service to pry open Miss
Pattersons writing desk, the key
of which was in her pocket
It was a pretty sharp thing
for a little fellow to do and
the people here were greatly

surprized at the rapidity with
which the whole thing was
settled. The boy was locked
up in the hospital for the
night. Am so sorry did want
him so much to get some
knowledge of the gospel
while he was here. We go over
to Fa Ti to attend the ex
aminations tomorrow. Henry
and his family seem very
well. Henry was appointed
Mission Treasurer at our
last Annual meeting in
the place of Dr Swan. It
will add some to his work
but will keep him in touch
with other Missions and at
New York. Hattie is now in
Canton Came up to attend
the Mission meetings. She
has not been quite so well
for a few days and may
not write much home.

The Dr feels it is decided that
the will go home in the
Spring leaving here the 1st
of April. It will not be safe
for her to start any sooner
on account of the cold. Miss
Butler will go with her. So
about 9 months after you
receive this you may expect
her. Her idea is to come
back next Autumn , but the
Dr has no expectation that
she will be able to. He says
she ought to go south for
the Winter but that will
be a point to be denied
later on. I must acknowl
edge to feeling very sad in-
deed about it, for she certain
ly can not return unless she
is much stronger than
now. Her nervous system
is much broken down,
and the remedy for that

[Continued vertically on the first page]
about your Christmas gathering and hope it was a
success Do not wonder you at home dreaded it.
Hattie is to
do nothing nor
see Societies
nor write letters
nor nothing if
she goes home
It is nice
she can go.
I must close
as I expect
the sewing
woman is
waiting for
me.
With love
to each one
Mattie
