That [--it--] is a funny
[u] Bro [/u] that I made up there
My pen did'nt go right or else
I am a little confused. Your
refreshing letter of Dec 20th
reached here 3 days ago for
which I am much obliged.
Your letters do good like a
medicine. I am glad you
let our folks at home see
your smiling face when you
were visiting your friends in
the East or Center maybe I
ought to call it. They have written
of the delight experienced in your
visit and the [u] good sermons [/u]
you preached. They said nothing
[--about--] derogatory about that school-
house sermon, & I hav'nt heard
any thing about Father getting
mobbed or anything of the kind. I have
no doubt in the world but the
sermon was an excellent one
but probably I had better not say
that to you as it would seem some
like saying that you had been
writing to me that which was
in a measure "[u] unhistorical [/u]."
Well my good brother I should
like to [--y--] hear you preach
again in a school house or
any where else. I hope to some
day. I do not write many
English sermons, have to preach
once in about three months. I
began a sermon last Monday
as it was my turn to preach to
the missionary community next
Sabbath evening but on Wednesday a
missionary from Formosa made
his appearance and will take
the service. This puts me off another
week and so as you know is
my habit under such circumstan-
ces I dropped my pen & pencil
to wait till the time of preaching
was nearer at hand. I wonder
if you ever preached on the
text that I am writing on. Hattie
gave it to me, the last part
of the 12th verse of Matt 14th
"And went and told Jesus." I
have written about half my sermon
and think it is a very nice
text. The theme I get from it
is "Jesus the intimate personal
friend of every believer." I think
I should like writing sermons
if I did not have to write too
many of them, but I have so
little of it to do that I fear
I shall not grow much in
that direction. I preach in
Chinese in the hospital every
Sabbath at 11-o-clock. Have
regular services as we have
at home. I am to have charge
of the religious services of the hos-
pital for the next 6 months till
Mr Preston comes back. There are
generally from 50 to 100 in-patients
and then on Monday & Friday are
prescribing days when a good many
come. There is preaching on these
days, a meeting on Thursday
evening, and prayers with the
patients every morning at 1/2 past
8-o-clock. I rather think I shall
perhaps go in about an hour a day
besides. This will keep me busy
in addition to studying away at
the Chinese language & the super inten-
dence of the [--C--] boy's day schools of
which there are four. After Preston
comes back I expect to itinerate
my special department is to be
country work and I hope before
many years we shall have a
goodly number of churches spring-
ing up in the neighboring villages
and cities. But there is a very de-
termined opposition to be overcome
and we need the prayers of all
God's people that he will take away the
stony heart and give the heart of flesh.
Excuse me for not writing more as I have a good
many other letters to write for this mail.
