Canton Dec 11th
Dear Ones at Home
I will direct this to the
household and jot a little down
now and then during these last
busy days before Henry and
Hattie leave Canton which they
expect to do a week from next
Monday. Last Saturday we
three [?kuneungs?] had our Photos
taken together and after sitting
6 times at last obtained one that
was made to answer, although
the writer after looking at the
picture is forced to conclude
she is not beautiful. We wanted
them for the girls in the school
The Women's department on
that day prepared a dinner for
us gotten up in foreign state
7 courses, table set in the school
chapel. The girls are to have one
next Saturday. They have all been
very busy preparing little tokens
of remembrance for Na Kunenng
and come in now and then
to present them protesting they are
very poor affairs not worthy to
be considered a gift, the Chinese
custom on all occasions whenever
they make a present. Monday
afternoon was spent in buying
articles for a boy ordered by Mrs
Baldwin of Fuchaw, to be sent
to a ladies Society in Cincinatti
contents to be sold for proceeds to
be appropriated to missionary
purposes. Then Maddie Beacom
sent out an order in the last
mail to be filled. I was a little
sorry these orders came so near
the time of Henry's and Hattie's
leaving but they will get through
with every thing nicely I hope.
They said two trunks by sail
vessel which will be forward-
ed to Hong Kong on Saturday
next. This is the largest part of
the packing, as it will be a sort
of Miscellaneous mixture. I am
so happy that my [u] trunk [u] and
[u] satchel [/u] can go home if I do not
I know the dear ones will re-
member me when they see them
but do not let any sadness
come into those thoughts. There
will be one of us left in this heath-
en land to "blow the gospel
trumpet" as Father says
Monday eve. Mr Nye was here and
I quite begrudged the time we
spent in the parlor entertaining
him. We only have a few days
more so we do not wish to [u] waste [/u]
them. Hattie will tell you about
this gentleman when she gets home
Wednesday. Spent the whole morn-
ing in getting presents for the schools
I do not know how Lucy and
I will manage shopping when
these old missionaries leave will
not make very good bargains with
these shrewd Chinese I fear.
They are the [--funiest--] funniest people
do not care a particle about being
detected in a round lie indeed
that seems part of their trade.
This afternoon went to two schools
did not get back until five oclock
took tea and then it was time
for prayer meeting. We met at
Dr Kerr's. It seems nice to have
them back after an absence of
more than a month in Swaton.
Next Wednesday eve we expect
to have the social at our house
and the writer chances to be Ed
itress but I think she will not
contribute to that organ.
Henry and Hattie have con-
cluded to take passage direct form
Singapore to London only stopping
for the trip in Palestine which
will detain them perhaps 3 weeks
I am so glad they have not decided
