Title
Letter from Henry to Emily, December 29, 1880
Subject
Presidents--Election; Presidential candidates; Infants
Description
Henry writes to his sister Emily, sending his wishes for a Merry Christmas. He is glad to hear of President Garfield's election. He was happy to see that all the nominations, Grant, Sherman, and Garfield, were Ohio men. He heard that President Hayes might make a trip to Canton after his term is up. Henry mentions Mr. Wynkoop and his wife. He says his son Richard is a very good baby, healthy and growing nicely.

Canton Dec 29th 1880
My dear Sister Emily
As it is just about half
way between Christmas and New Years
I will begin this letter by sending
to you and all the others my
wishes for "a merry Christmas" and a
"Happy New Year" ------- I do not whether
I have written since the election of Garfield
([--the news I mean--]) (since the news arrived here
I mean). I was very glad to learn of the
success of the Republican party. Good for
John High! Tell Edward to shake hands
with him for me as a nother Republican
but better still a nother Christian I was
not specially surprised at hearing of
his voting the Republic ticket but I
was surprised to hear of Dr Beach doing
it. Well we will have a good Ohio presi-
dent for the next four years and I hope
he will do as well as Hayes' has done
Whether Grant or Sherman or Garfield had
been the nominee of the Republican
party it would have been an Ohio man
all the same. That state (as I have
just written to Mr Rice of Socramento)
is a good state for Generals and Presidents
to come from to say nothing of other
people . I heard last night that Pres
Hayes was expecting to make a visit
here after his term is through. I suppose
he is going to make the tour of the
world which seems the thing to do
now days by those who can afford it.
[--My--] Mr Wynkoop, formerly a
missionary to India, and his mother
are in Canton now stopping with
the Happers. Mrs Wynkoop was here 10 years
ago with her husband. Her husband has
since died and she is now going around
the world with her son - both of them very
pleasant people. I do not know whether
you ever see Mrs Myers. I thought
if you did it might be pleasant for her
to know what Mr Wynkoop said about him.
Mr Wynkoop was a classmate of his in the
Seminary. He said he was at a different
station and did not see him more
than once or twice in India. He stopped a
minute and then he said - "Mr Myers was
one of the best missionaries that ever went
to India. The natives loved him and
they speak of him with tears till this day.
they talk specially about the prayers he
used to make"
As for ourselves we are in
usual health. Bella scalded her foot a
few days ago but it is better Willie has
been troubled with diarrhea for a few but nothing
serious I hope. He got the pictures Mother
sent him as a Christmas gift and was
much pleased with them . He says the
two little dogs are having a bath. He
seems to think they are just coming
out of the bath tub. Richard Varnum is
growing nicely - is healthy and a very good
baby. We are all expecting to go into
the country for two weeks soon after New
Years - are going to San Ui - [?Chik Hin?]
and Chung Lau . I have just got
another station in the San-Ning district
MoHing the Los Angelos scholar go it. [?N?]
is rented for ten years --
It is getting almost mail time
and "I must draw my remarks to
a close" We [--having--] have been enjoying
beautiful weather for the last three
months. It is a little cold just now
thermometer clear down to 50° (above zero)
I suppose we shall have hot weather
before very long.
Our new installment of mission-
aries arrived, 3 weeks ago, and am working
away at the language. They seem to be
energetic workers and I hope will prove
good help
With love from us all
Your Aff Bro

Wynkoop
Wynkoop
