Oct 10th 1872.
My dear Clara,
The last mail
brought your letter of Aug 17th
in company with one from Em and
Edward. I have written to Edward
and you must thank Em for me.
I wish some one would tell us how
"the child" is now a days and
whether her eyes trouble her or not.
There is no use in hoping that
she will divulge the secret I am
convinced. Your description of
the sitting room at the old house at
home was really charming I expect
you will be writing romances
some of these days unless you
turn your thoughts in some
other direction. I am all alone
tonight Henry left this morning
with Mr [u] John [/u] Preston of the
English Wesleyan Mission for a
trip of ten days in the country
and Miss Chase who is still here
has gone down to spend the night
at Mr [u] Charles [/u] Prestons. "Our Professors"
left yesterday morning and Mr
Fitch with them. I almost had
the blues after they went away and
it seemed quite lonesome. I wish
so much that they might have
staid with us a little while but
am very thankful for the privilege
of seeing as much of them as
we did. Prof Seelye is splendid
and Dr Hitchcock is very nice
it seemed so pleasant for them
to be together they were classmates
in college. We enjoyed having Mr
Fitch with us very much, he seemed
so interested in seeing all that was
to be seen. He gave me a very
pretty dress of Chinese silk blue
striped with white I will send you
a piece when I cut it. I have
wanted a dress like it ever since
I came to China but never
seemed to come to the right place
to get it. Then the morning he
left he said to Henry "Dr Happer
is a very clever man, he will present
you with ten dollars which I hope
you will not decline." We never
want to take [u] pay [/u] of any one for staying
with us but of course there was
nothing to be said as he did not
[u] say [/u] that [u] he [/u] had given it to Dr
Happer for us. Now I must tell
you some bad news that is that the
steamers after this month are only
going to run monthly until a
year from this date and then a
semi monthly line is to be commenced
"for life". I expect this is the result
of the loss of the America the company
feel rather poor after losing a million
and a half of dollars. Now if you
have got in the habit of writing
every two weeks and cant stop it
will be all right the letters will
come on in due season if they
do rest by the way. Poor little
Josie Hamsher if I had a piano
to spare I would send her one
Why dont some one tell her that
she will [u] never [/u] get a million stamps
not if she should get ten every
day for [u] 250 [/u] [u] years [/u] I have heard
of an agent by the name of Noyes to
whom people who want a piano
can apply why dont she try him.
I expect long before you get this
little Mattie Crane will be Mrs
Orr, what next? are there to be
no old maids excepting "the
Noyess." What will Alice do without
Mattie. The old brick house will
seem quite deserted I should
think. I am glad to see
that Mary Crane is one
of the officers of the Woman's
Miss Society organized in
Mansfield. I wonder if
you see the Woman's
Work now We have [u] not [/u]
[u] seen [/u] [u] a [/u] [u] single [/u] [u] copy [/u] in
Canton this year. I cant
think what is the matter
I wrote a piteous appeal for them
in April and I am beginning
to think the response must
have been burned up in the America.
