Title

Letter from Henry to Mary, August 31, 1878

Subject

Sabbath; Sabbath schools; Conversion; Infants

Description

Henry writes to his sister Mary about how currently their lives seem to be the same every day. Henry has been attending a Bible class every evening. Some of the members of the Bible class are considering joining the church. He hopes that he can help sway their decision and get them to join by November 1st. There is a state fair coming up and Henry hopes school would be canceled for the day. The baby can now "creep" and is playing "Pat-a-cake".

Sacramento Aug 31st
1878
My dear sister Mary -
I think I wrote
to Clara last week and now
I have come to the little girl that
takes griddle cakes with cotton in
them for "1st Class" boarders. I have
just taken Edwards letter from the
Post Office. He is getting his ground
ready for wheat in good time.
I think you must have had a
very pleasant time during the meetings
of the Teacher's Institute. I was in
hopes the Moline factory would
take up the planter. But I
suppose such farms like to keep
things in their own hands if pos-
sible + get the profits. Our life here
is so much the same day by day
that it does not seem as though
there was much new to write.
We expect Henry Ward Beecher
will lecture here on the 6th + 7th
I presume we will go to one of his
lectures. Very likely he will preach

on the Sabbath also. To morrow
is communion in the Presbyterian
church here. Two Chinese expect
to join. We feel quite encouraged
in our work here. I have kept
up a Bible class every evening
in the school which is well attended
usually have from 12 to 15 in
this class. I knew there were
some who were thinking of
joining the church but I did
not know just how many. I
asked any who wished to talk
about the matter to stop after
school Tuesday Evening. There
were seven who remained in
addition to one who had already
been before the session + there is
still another one making nine
in all who express a wish to
become connected with the church.
Three applied at the session
meeting on Thursday. Two were
received and the other was asked
to wait until another time and

try to get somewhat better ac-
quainted with the doctrines. His
knowledge seemed rather de-
ficient. I am going to get
those interested ones to study if
I can and go over some
question[--s--] books and I hope that
most if not all of them will join
by the 1st of Nov ---.
There is to be a
[--fair--] state fair here the middle
of next month so I presume
we shall have a good oppor-
tunity of seeing something of
California's wonderful Agricultu-
ral products. Perhaps we will
dismiss school for a few days
at that time. We have had quite
comfortable weather for awhile but
it is getting hotter again now. People
say there is usually some pretty hot
weather in September. Bella + baby
are about as usual. Baby can
creep now, and understands "Pat-a
cake" If we say "Pat-a-cake" to
him he will straighten up and

spat his little hands togEther
like a good fellow. I wish you
could all see him. I know you
would think that he is a nice
little fellow. I am so glad to learn
that Mattie is getting along so well.
Mrs Kerr attributes considerable of
it to Hattie's getting back to be with
her. I am glad she is going to
Chefoo. I know she will have a
real good time at Mr Corbetts.
I saw Mrs Corbett in Brooklyn
and I think she is a real good
woman. Miss Downing too is
close by and she is one of the
excellent of the earth . I am so
glad that I saw her as she
was on her way back. It will
be pleasant for Mattie to hear from
us through her.
I guess I can stand a
suit of clothes off of Col Dowd's "wedding
suit" piece. His getting married makes
me think of what Mrs Kerr said to Dr
Patterson when I was in S F. He had
just said that he had married that day
a lady 60 years old (I mean of course Dr P
performed the ceremony) You know Mrs Kerr
is very apt say just what she thinks
[Note: Letter continues sideways in the right margin]
she said "sixty year old!! I should think she had better
be thinking about something else than getting married." Dr

[Note: Letter continues sideways on page one]
Patterson however said "You know Mrs Kerr people are differently
constituted. Some are socially inclined and are happier to have com-
pany. I under-
stand she has
got a very
good husband."
Now I must
close - Much
love to all from
Henry

Pat-a-cake”
