Henry wishes his father a happy birthday. He is preparing an English sermon to preach tomorrow. Continuing the letter a week later, Henry is glad to hear that his father is getting over his illness. He talks about the propositions made to the foreign ministers by the Chinese Authorities. He also mentions the new telegraph line connecting Hong Kong to Europe and America. It will now only take 2-3 days for news to travel. He plans to travel to the country soon and says the people are reasonably friendly, but "of course, call us, foreign devil..."

My dear Father
Your children on this
side of the world have not forgotten
that this is your birth day and
wish to join with those who are
near you in congratulations and
in thanksgivings to the author
of all blessings for sparing you
so long. I thought when I left
home that there was little prob-
ability of my Ever seeing you
again in this world but now
I often feel that very likely I
may. You were sick when last
we heard from home but I trust
that long before this you have
been restored to a comfortable
measure of health. I have just
got home from a trip of four
days into the country and to
night am in the midst of pre-
paring an English Sermon to preach to-
morrow Evening.
July 10th I wrote the previous
page on last Saturday and
then as we Expected the mail
on Monday thought I would defer
the rest until the letters came
and so have waited until now
We were glad to hear that
you were beginning to get about
the room some and I trust
by this time your health is
quite fully restored, but you
must have had quite a
tedious time
Among other things in
the letters from home inquiry
is made as to the present
condition[--s--] of things. The notice
in the papers of some propositions
made to the foreign ministers
by the Chinese Authorities
will not of course be ad-
mitted by there ministers
the [--sp--] papers speak of them
as an "[u]Edict[/u]" by the Chinese
Authorities. They are not an
Edict at all, only propositions
made to the forEign ministers at
Peking which they will not, of
course, admit at all.
There is none of that
Excited unsettled state of feeling
now that we had last summer
and we have not at present
the least apprehension of any
danger. If we do have
you will be apprised of it
There is a telegraph line
now completed to Hongkong
so that we get telegrams of
important Events in [--England--] Europe
or America within 2 or 3
days after their occurrence
which makes the world seem
smaller and Western countries
nearer. If there should
be any serious troubles in
China you would doubtless
see it noticed in the telegrams
within a very short time
which is very different from
last summer when you had
to wait a month or more
for news from here. I have
been travelling considerably
about in the country for the
last month and find the
people reasonably friendly. They
talk bad about us, of course,
call us, foreign devil and all
kinds of names but I Enjoy the
work and hope to do a good
deal of it in future. I am
going in a few days to a
place 50 to 80 miles to the
south of Canton or perhaps
somewhat South West. We opened
some schools there a few months
ago and I have not yet been
to visit them. I hire a boat
large Enough to live in quite
comfortably and take a servant
and native assistant. I
hope the seed thus cast
upon the waters may be found
Even though it should not be
until after weary days.
I must close which I do with
much love for all the dear ones

I read with much interest Edwards account of his
corn-planters. I should think it must be a first rate
[Note: Additional note continues sideways on page one]
thing. I hope he may make something out of it. We shall
look with interest for that music book and we are much
obliged for the tunes which he has named for us.
