Canton Dec 9th 1870
My dear Sister Mary -
It is a long time
very since I have written to you
is'nt it? I got down my big book to
night to see when + I found it was
last April. Too bad is'nt it. Well
first of all I must Express my great
obligations for all the good letters you
have written to us during that time.
Now let me ask you confidentially
a little question. Your modesty would
keep you very quiet about it unless
I asked you. Well Every time I look
at that picture with six girls sitting
in it and all of them my sisters I
wonder whether that little one in the
middle looks as she used to For
somehow I have got an impression
that some one wrote to me that after
she was sick her hair came out
curly. Now I want to know if
is now curly or straight. You will
yell me now wont you?
I am so sorry to hear from
the home letters that Frank is so
unwell. You must give them very
warmest sympathy . I think about
him often. I do hope we shall soon
hear of his being better.
You spoke about losing the plan
of our house . Well since the last mail
went we have pretty near come to
the conclusion that we will leave
this house after awhile. We have
sent home by this mail an application
for funds to start a boy's boarding school
+ I suppose will probably by next mail
send home one for a girl's boarding
school. In case this is granted
I suppose Hattie will have charge
of it. The building would be put on
a vacant lot belonging to the
mission near Dr Happer's + of course
we should move there. I have little
doubt that this will Eventually be
done. But probably we shall stay
where we are for another year
at least + so the plan that you
got will answer for that long in
your memory as you have lost
the plan itself. Where we have got
the plan for our new house fin-
ished We shall let you know.
The news that you sent
about the happy circumstances in
which Cyrus finds himself placed
reached us by the last mail. I
appreciate all the more their kind-
ness in giving us such timely in-
formation when it was such a
profound secret at home. Of course
it had all been finished a good
while before the letters got to us.
I have met "NEttie Pearson" now
Mrs C Crane. Cynthia + I
visited at her father's house when
we went to Columbus + it is
one of those visits which will hold
a place in my memory forever. I
liked the whole family very much
indeed + the sad death of the
father not very long after impressed
itself deeply on my mind. I re-
member what a bitter cold night it
was when he took us several
miles to the depot + how he in-
sisted upon us having the seat
while he managed to get along
between us. He was one of those
men whose goodness + deep interest
in what pertained to the welfare
of Zion was too Evident to be mistaken
+ without [--Eff--] any display of it
on his part was abundantly man-
ifest to Every one. Well I wish
Cyrus + his wife a happy + useful
life. Your reference to "our darling
Cynthia" calls back to mind
that Evening to which you [--sp--] refer
on the 12th of Oct 1865. Yes she did
look beautiful then but not so
beautiful as that last afternoon of
her life in Macao. I have often
wished that the dear home ones could
have seen her then. And dear
Hannah how I should like to visit
the spot where she sleeps. They are
together in heaven + I love to
think they know each other there.
When we last wrote there was
considerable Excitement here by
various stories put into circulation
in reference to foreigners but this
Excitement has now passed away.
The Authorities are Evidently de-
termined on keeping matters quiet
+ will no doubt succeed. The
gentry who have quite as much
influence as the Authorities have
issued a paper[--s--] stating that these
stories are false + calling upon the
people not to make disturbance
We have just heard here that
a telegram announces war between
Russia + Turkey + that England +
Austria will join with Turkey. I
still hope that this only a rumor
How dreadful it would be if all
Europe nearly should thus be in-
volved in war - but he will
overturn + overturn until He shall
come [?whose right?] it is + the kingdoms
[--of--]
of this world shall become the
kingdoms or our Lord and of his
Christ.
In regard to my own personal
self Mary I am well + weight
152 1/2 lbs. Hattie thinks she is fat
but you will be able to judge of
that from the pictures we sent by
the last mail. I am still studying
away at the Chinese. I am getting
to talk it somewhat better than for-
merly. I now go into a chapel in
the city Every day Except when I
visit the country schools or preach
in the hospital. Some native assistant
preaches in the chapel Every day. Some-
times I talk + sometimes I
do not. I calculate to go a little
Early + talk + gather the people
until the assistant comes. People
come in better when a foreigner is
present.-- So I comfort myself that
I am perhaps doing some good if
I am the means of getting more
people into the chapel.
Our communion services
last Sabbath were very interesting.
There were five added in Ex-
amination. Two of them were Dr
Happer's daughters Mary + Verdie.
Then there were three Chinese -- two
from the boy's training school +
one woman who lives not very
far from Dr Happers. Well I must
stop as I want to write a letter
to Sarah yet to night. I am glad
she has got such a nice place +
hope she will Enjoy it very much
+ do much good. Give a great
deal of love to all the dear ones +
accept much for yourself from
Your Aff Brother

我亲爱的玛丽姐妹——
这是很长一段时间

哈珀医生附近的任务,当然还有
我们应该搬到那里。我很少
