Henry writes to his sister Hattie from the "Western Reserve Cadets" in Hudson, Ohio. There are many other young men there in connection with their family. Hudson May 6th 1861
Dear Hattie
I presume you have
been looking for a letter from
me before this but I have ne-
glected to write. I arrived here
safely about 6 o clock the day I
started. Father told me when I
got out of the buggy that I had
5 hours to get to Akron in and
so I might take it easy and
set down often. I did neither
I did'nt set down nor take my
budget off of my back until I
set down in the depot at
Cuyahoga Falls. I got there about
an hour and a half before the
train none the worse for the wear
except a slight blister on my little
toe. Found my chum ready to
start home the next day. His
brother has volunteered and he

has to go home to attend to
the farm. He has furnished me
with another chum however, a
fellow that is commencing in
the grammar school a real
orderly little fellow. There is
some was excitement here as elsewhere
The students have got up a
beautiful flag 24 feet by 13 which
every pleasant day waves from
a pole on the chapel steeple a
hundred and twenty feet from
the ground. Several from the
grammar school have enlisted 1 from
college. Geo Ford also enlisted but
his company was sent back as
their services were not needed
Sam Williamson whom Edward knew
has enlisted also Charles Ashwinn
We have formed a company
in college to drill. We don't bind
ourselves to serve. There are about
60 of us, a pretty fine looking

company when we get well to
going. Major Sanford from Cleveland
drills us. He is one of the [--Z--] celebrated
Zouaves and will give us the
Zouave drill. He charges nothing
for his services except his railroad
fare from Cleveland. It is real
good fun to drill and splendid
exercise. Prof Young is our Captain
The faculty were quite interested
in getting up the company. I guess
they [?have?] some policy in it too. For
a good many would have gone
and enlisted otherwheres if it had
not been done. 225 troops went
through from Akron to Cleveland
the other day. Last Wednesday
a whole regiment from North Western
Pennsylvania went through towards
Pittsburgh. We had about 30 pails
of water ready and the "Western
Reserve Cadets" went through the
cars giving them water. A barrel

of Ale was also distributed
among them. There were some
fine looking fellows among them
lawyers, merchants and I believe
ministers. They seemed in good spirits
but they were most choked and
wanted water badly. I have spent
my time telling war news and
find that I have nothing else
to tell. You need'nt think because
I belong to the "Western Reserve
Cadets" that I am going to war
at present because I shall do no
such thing. I should like to
know when you write whether there
is any prospect of my jetting
the Academy. But I have not
time to write noon
Write very soon
to your
Aff Brother
