Alleghany City
Jan 26th 1864
Dear Hattie
I d'on't know
whether I ought to write
first or you but as I
suspect my prospects
are pretty poor unless
I do write I must try
to scribble something.
We got to Wooster the
day we left home a
little after 2-o-clock.
Martha remained as the
cars were behind time.
I got started at 4-o-clock
the cars wEre crowded
Excepting one old ricketty
thing with a squad of
paddies in it. Folks would
come + look at it + pass

along. All I wanted
was a seat + I had
the good sense to go
right in + get ^one besides
the Entertainment of the
conversation of the paddies.
There was plenty of
room. I put my knap-
sack on the End of one
seat, laid my head
upon it, stretched
my body along the seat
Extended my legs (limbo?)
across to the opposite
one, reposed my [--legs--] feet
upon it + made my-
self as comfortable
generally as I could
under the circumstances.
Got to this city at
11-o-clock P.M + since
that time have bein
residing in the 4th story

of Beatty Hall.
Well Hattie, to change
the subject, I have heard
the veritable live "John
B Gough" lecture. He
lectured on Sat Evening
+ on Monday also. I
went on Saturday Evening
When he first commenced
I began to be afraid that
my Expectations had been
raise too ^high + that I should
be disappointed, when
he got over about 1/4 of
the lecture, I began to
think it was pretty
nice, when he got 1/2 through
I began [--to think that--] to
ponder the question of
going again on Monday
when he got through
I concluded I could'nt
stay away on Monday

no how I could [?fix?]
it + so back I went on
Monday + was delightfully
Entertained again. The
people gather in the street
in a great crowd long
before the doors are open.
He will make an
audience shake their
sides a little harder than
any man I ever heard, +
yet his lectures are not
nonsense but full of
good sense + instruction
His subject the first
night was "Peculiar people"
the second night "Eloquence
+ orators" -- I dont know
of anything special more
to write. I have heard
from Martha once since
she went back. She was safely
back + going into it. Give
my respects to your associate in
the teacher's department of Westfield
School + Everybody Else + don't doubt but
that I am your brother HV Noyes
