My dear Sister Emily -
It takes so long for me to go [illegible]
at home, writing as I do only one letter a month, that
I forget whom I have written to last. You shall have
the letter this time any[--how--]how and whether it is your
turn or not I am sure it is time you had one.
We read all the home letters very carefully as we always
do. I read of the death of Mr McDowell with deep sym-
pathy. I have sympathised with him during his long
sickness and now I hope you will give to Mrs McDowell
+ the children my deepest sympathy in their sorrow.
The Lord comfort them. And I read all you said about
[illegible] Spear with all the more interest because he had
been my scholar. I always liked him, and was rejoiced
to learn that he Enjoyed the christian's hope in death. Re-
member he kindly to his mother and give her too my
warm sympathy. There are many others to whom
I would like to send my warm regards, among them
our good neighbors Mr + Mrs Shaw and [?Dan?] and also
all who ^used to gather in our little church from Sabbath to Sabbath
of whom I have distinct and pleasant remembrances, the
children in the Sabbath School and many others, too many
to write all the names, but among them I would specially
remember Mrs Leitzell + her family. Well now for the
news. Not very much news here. [u]We are well[/u], Em,
[u]both of us[/u]. In fact I think I never felt better in China
than I have lately. I have generally seemed to need
a good deal of sleep and I need hardly say to one
who knows me as well as you do that [u]I have taken
it[/u]. For the last month or two however I have com-
menced getting up Early in the morning as I used
to at college from 4 to 5-o-clock and Enjoy it first
rate. I think I have got acclimated pretty thoroughly
and have Every prospect of Enjoying here Excellent health.
Hattie and I were quite refreshed by our visit to
Macao and our trip into the country after the long
summer. It was grand to breathe the pure mountain
air and see the clear streams and ramble about
in the country after being residents of the city so
long. It just pops into my head that a photographer
who lives across the river opposite us has taken a picture
of our houses. I went over yesterday to try to get one
but he had'nt any now but said he would have in
a few days so I think you may Expect me by next
mail. It is a very good picture. Has Hattie told
you I wonder that we have the meetings [--for the--]
of the Missionaries Sabbath Evenings at our house now.
All meet together [--now--] and I like it much better
Our Cabinet Organ comes in very good place + helps the
singing along very much. We had last week a
course of lectures given by different missionaries in the
hospital chapel on scientific subjects, [--and--] for the Chinese
There were two a day besides usually some kind of a meeting
in the Evening and Extending through 4 days. They were very well
attended by the Chinese of all the missions. [--Next--] The lectures

were arranged by the Canton Missionary Conference and not the Presbyterian
